Questions & Answers
Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
I like to think that I make a difference in all of the cases that I handle, but the most recent case was one in which I obtained a judgment, on a pro bono basis, for a young man who had had his car illegally towed by a towing company who then demanded a large payment before they would release the car to him. The judgment was about 10 times what the tow truck company had charged him.
How did you build a successful practice?
Out of law school I started working for an insurance defense firm. I opened my own practice two years later, and some of the insurance companies that I had done work for sent me cases to handle for them. In addition to insurance defense work, I started handling Family Law cases for clients who could not afford Family Law attorneys. This resulted in Family Law referrals from the clients that I had helped.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
First, honesty. Second, ability. Third, the hourly rate being charged. If a lawyer is honest, the client will soon enough learn of his ability. If a lawyer is honest, the client will not be overbilled.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
Local knowledge is helpful, but not crucial, to the success of a case. Local knowledge can be obtained through effort. Honesty and ability cannot be.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
Whether or not the client has a case worth pursuing, whether or not the cost of the case would justify pursuing it, and whether or not the client should consider representing himself or herself.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
Basic information on the type of case, whether civil or Family Law, and the amount of money or the types of issues involved in the case.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
I like to think that my fees are more reasonable than other lawyers of my experience. I honestly advise potential clients as to whether or not they should retain an attorney on a case. I will honestly tell potential clients whether or not they could adequately represent themselves in a case. If they decide to represent themselves, I offer to prepare pleadings and forms for them at a substantially reduced hourly rate.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
In Family Law cases, (1) protecting the children from understandably angry parents, and (2) convincing clients that anger and revenge are financially and emotionally expensive and can only adversely impact any children of the marriage.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
Woodworking. Refinishing a fine old piece of furniture is both non-confrontational and rewarding, not unlike saving an old marriage instead of dissolving it.
Are you involved in your community?
Only through my practice.
