Stann Givens is the founding partner in the law firm of Givens Givens Sparks. He began as a prosecuting attorney in the State Attorney’s office in Tampa, Florida. For many years, he has specialized in the area of Family Law and is Board Certified by the Florida Bar in that field. He was also voted "Lawyer of the Year" 2016 by Best Lawyers in the area of Family Law in Tampa.

He is a former president of the prestigious American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, Florida Chapter and has frequently lectured throughout the state on matters relating to divorce law. He is the author of the Alimony Chapter of the Florida Bar Dissolution of Marriage textbook.

He was the first recipient of the Professionalism Award of the Family Law American Inn of Court of Tampa in 1999, and his highest professional honor was the recent renaming of the Inn, which is now known as the Stann W. Givens Family Law American Inn of Court of Tampa.
Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

I had a recent case where my client and the other spouse were fighting over timesharing with the child. When everything was over, my client was able to retain the amount of overnights desired and remains the strong parent who works with the other parent on decision making, but is typically the one who determines the future of the children. In another recent case, there was a vast amount of complex assets to be divided, including interests in private corporations. My client was able to leave the marriage with control over much of the assets and retain the income desired.

How did you build a successful practice?

My family law practice has been built by referrals from previous clients who were pleased with the outcomes of their cases and with the way they were treated by our firm.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

Clients should look for a lawyer who is board certified in marital and family law, has been admitted into the elite American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (only 78 of the 104,000 lawyers in Florida have been) and who is known for hard work and superior treatment of his or her clients.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

A lawyer who has practice for decades in front of the local judges retains a tremendous knowledge of what to expect from those judges and can guide the clients properly through the otherwise difficult family law process.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

Our law firm is different from the other family law firms in our community by having a former president of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers Florida Chapter, two lawyers board certified in Marital and Family Law and four former state prosecutors.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

The most rewarding aspect of my job is to see our clients get through the difficult process of a family law proceeding with the maximum amount of time to be spent with their children, the highest retention of their assets and with the least amount of money spent on attorneys.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

Charity work.

Are you involved in your community?

I am an elder in the Presbyterian Church, and I am on the board of Faith Café, which feeds the homeless. On the original board of directors of the Gasparilla Distance Classic, which has raised millions of dollars for local charities and was race director in years 3 and 4.

Physician Obtains Downward Modification to Alimony Obligation
In a post-judgment divorce action, a physician was successful in obtaining a downward modification to his alimony obligation due to a substantial decrease in his income.  The parties were divorced back in 2007, and pursuant to the judgment of dissolution, the husband was required to pay alimony to the wife in the amount of $6,000 per month for a period of eleven months, followed by $5,000 per month thereafter.  The amount of the alimony obligation was modifiable upon a substantial change in circumstances in accordance with Connecticut General Statutes § 46b-86.
In Post Judgment Divorce Action, Court Determines that $1.2 Million Payment to Husband was Income, Not Liquidation of an Asset
In a post-judgment decision rendered, the Superior Court of Fairfield at Bridgeport addressed whether a payment that a husband received from his employer after the parties’ divorce constituted an asset or, alternatively, income.  The parties in this action obtained an uncontested divorce in 2008.  As part of their separation agreement, the husband was obligated to pay the wife child support in the amount of $1,600.00 per month.
Child Care Costs and the Connecticut Child Support Guidelines
In a decision rendered previously, the Connecticut Appellate Court explained the definition of “child care costs” as set forth in the Connecticut Child Support Guidelines.  In that particular case, the parties were married for approximately five years and were the parents of two minor children.  During the year of 2003, they entered into a custody stipulation which was subsequently incorporated into a comprehensive separation agreement.  The separation agreement provided that the husband would pay the wife $2,500 per month in unallocated alimony and child support for a period of five years, followed by straight child support.
