Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

I once had three wrongful death cases against a large dialysis chain. Our clients had lost close loved-ones, but the company’s attitude was that they were on dialysis and would have died anyway. Their last settlement offer was $0. We took the cases to trial and put their CEO on the stand. He was so arrogant and out of touch that it sealed their fate. We got three jury verdicts of more than $100 million each.

How did you build a successful practice?

When I first started my own law firm, a wise older lawyer once told me that if you do good work for your clients, everything else will take care of itself. Running a law firm is complicated but that core principle is true. When we take a case at Paynter Law, we are 100% committed to giving our client the personalized service that they deserve and aggressively litigating their cases.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

First, a client should make sure that the lawyer has experience handling their particular type of case. A lawyer who primarily does criminal defense is not going to do a good job handling a personal injury case. Second, a client should make sure that their lawyer is responsive and able to explain to them the strengths and weaknesses of their cases and potential outcomes. If a lawyer is unable to return your calls/emails promptly, this is a huge red flag that your case is not a priority and your lawyer is not devoting the attention required to your case.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

For personal injury cases, it is important to hire a lawyer who is familiar with state court procedure and knows the local judges. At Paynter Law, we litigate personal injury cases throughout North Carolina and are able to assist clients in any county in NC. In addition, we have a complex litigation practice focusing on antitrust, intellectual property and class action litigation.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

During a free phone consultation, we will let you know whether the case is within our practice areas. If a case is within our practice areas, we often can give you a preliminary evaluation over the phone. For example, in most instances, you only have a certain amount of time to file a case before it is barred by the statute of limitations. If your case is beyond the statute of limitations, we can let you know. Often a preliminary evaluation requires additional information and during our free consultation we will let you know what information we need to continue your free case evaluation.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

Please be prepared to give us a detailed description of the incident, including the (i) location, (ii) date/time and (iii) individuals involved. If you are calling about a personal injury matter, you should be prepared to give a detailed description of the injuries suffered.
