The answer is almost always YES! Good cases are lost because people think things like: "I am in the right", "Everyone knows he did it", "I have witnesses". None of these things matter if you don't know how to get them in front of the Court, Judge, or Jury. Almost all Courts hold you to the same standard of knowledge of the laws and the rules as professional attorneys. This means that being right doesn't really matter.. This means even though everyone else knows he did it, you may not be able to tell the judge what everyone knows. And lastly, this means that even with witnesses you have to know how to have them properly found, noticed, served, subpoenaed, and professed to the opposing counsel in the proper time as required by law. It doesn't matter if it is criminal, civil, family, contract, whatever, the rules apply. Unless you are in a small claims or JP court, you need an attorney, Even then you have the advantage if you have an attorney. The old adage I use around my office when asked this question is "You can be the smartest, wisest, well known, good looking, and well read person in the world, but when going to Court without a lawyer you are the equivalent of the smartest, wisest, well known, good looking, and well read Roman slave or criminal in the ancient Coliseum where you are basically naked and unarmed and everyone else is either a wild animal or a well armored and well armed Gladiator." You have the same chances of survival in both situations. I hope this short article brought the point home. Good luck and God Bless. Bert Steinmann.

Kimberly Player Washington is a family law attorney who joined the firm in 2015. After beginning her legal career in the areas of family law and general civil representation, Kimberly worked as a legal consultant for Hewlett-Packard. She changed her practice focus when she realized that what she valued most about legal work was the ability to help people in their times of need. Today, she draws upon her extensive legal background to assist clients with a broad range of family-related legal matters. She is particularly passionate about helping parents protect their relationships with their children and make important decisions with their children’s long-term best interests in mind. A significant portion of Kimberly’s practice is devoted to representing clients in divorces and related matters. This includes representing clients at all stages of the divorce process, from pre-divorce planning through informal settlement negotiations, court-ordered mediation, and, when necessary, litigation in court. Kimberly also represents clients in post-divorce enforcement matters (such as enforcement of parents’ rights to visitation and child support), and she has helped many clients overcome challenging issues related to property distribution, financial support and parental rights. Kimberly represents clients outside of the divorce context as well. She has helped protect mothers’ and fathers’ rights in adoption and conservatorship proceedings, and she has handled numerous cases involving the custody rights of unmarried parents. She also represents parents and other family members regarding a broad range of other family-related legal issues. Whether Kimberly is drafting a prenuptial agreement, helping to establish paternity or simply helping a client better understand his or her circumstances, she takes the same personal, compassionate and strategic approach regardless of the specific issues involved.

My practice is limited exclusively to the representation of Social Security claimants and people who have suffered injuries due to the actions or fault of others. I have handled Social Security claims since 1994 and began practicing Social Security law exclusively in 2003. I do not dabble in family law, criminal law, real estate, etc. I know many people who handle other areas of law, and can certainly point you in the right direction if the need arises, but if you are having problems getting your Social Security benefits, been injured by another person's actions, or just have questions, give me a call. My practice is based in Houston, TX and I have represented over 1500 Social Security claimants throughout Metro Houston, the Gulf Coast of Texas, East Texas and the Brazos Valley. My goal is to make sure that qualified applicants receive the benefits to which they are entitled, and my entire practice is dedicated to making this happen. I take a very hands-on approach with all clients. I handle all initial client interviews, speak with you directly through all phases of the claims process, handle any appeals which may be necessary, and personally prepare you for and represent you at your hearing if one is needed. I am available to answer your questions at any stage of the claims process, even if you have not yet filed a claim.
