Questions & Answers

How did you build a successful practice?

Having practiced now for a number of years my practice is largely referrals from other attorneys, court officials or prior clients. While I maintain a web presence so people can learn more about me I do not advertise. Maintaining a small practice allows me to provide more personal attention to each case and client.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

Make certain your attorney is an ACE. That he gives you and your case Attention. Did he/she meet with me or did I meet a paralegal or investigator? Will the attorney be handling my case or someone else in his office? I handle my clients cases, not an investigator or paralegal or associate. That he is Competent. You would not hire a dentist to do brain surgery, do not hire an attorney who practices something other than criminal defense. I only accept state and federal criminal defense cases. That he is Experienced in the type of case you or your loved one faces. Even in criminal defense some lawyers practice only DUI law or in other particularized areas. If you have a white collar federal case hire someone with experience in that type of case.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

It is always helpful to know the officers, the prosecutor and the judges that will be involved in your case. That local knowledge helps to determine what approach to take in court and can make a crucial difference. I limit the area in which I accept cases so I can stay current with the changing parties in the system.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

I prefer to do in person consults and we offer a free initial consultation so there is no cost to you to come speak with me. Sometimes that is not possible or feasible because of distance or time constraints. Please have your documents with you on a phone consult so I can answer any questions about them and get names and dates from you. It is helpful to jot down what questions you might have so you can have all your concerns answered and, if you are talking to more than one attorney, so you can get the same questions answered by each lawyer to better compare and decide who would be best for you.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

There are many fine lawyers practicing criminal defense in and around Greenville and if I do not believe I am the right attorney for your case I will refer you to one or two of them. I dare say, however, that few of them have my combination of experience on both sides of the courtroom. I have been chief Public Defender in Richland and Beaufort County and a violent crimes prosecutor in Greenville, handled death penalty cases, taught prosecutors, defense lawyers and for the South Carolina Bar and tried hundreds of cases.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

Sometimes you have to get away from the office. When I do I prefer to get far away and travel quite a bit. My office has mementos from Spain, England, India and Kenya. There is usually a baseball cap around as I am a big fan of the Braves and the Yankees. I do not keep golf equipment around the office because, while I play and enjoy it, there are few good stories since I play so poorly.

Are you involved in your community?

My wife and I contribute to the community as we can considering time and family constraints. We have traditionally contributed 10% of our income to community organizations including Pendleton Place, the free medical clinic and Nothing But Nets.
