Questions & Answers
Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
I enjoy helping people - even on smaller, rourtine cases, but the most satisfying cases for me are when someone was wronged, feels hopeless, and does not know what to do to get their life back. When I can help that person, I feel great satisfaction. I recently helped a man who had no health insurance obtain the funding to get the medical care he needed for the injuries he sustained in an accident. He had no idea what to do was very depressed when he reached out to our firm. He now has his health back and avoided financial ruin. Seeing the improvement in his life makes me extremely happy and proud.
How did you build a successful practice?
We built our practice by focusing first and foremost on our clients. We believe that if we provide excellent service to them, our practice would thrive. We have grown from two attorneys to an office of six attorneys, eleven paralegals, an office manager, and part-time help by trying to provide the best service we can. I truly believe that no other personal injury firm - in Washington, DC or elsewhere - cares more about their clients and their cases.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
A client should for an attorney who is knowledgeable, aggressive, and trustworthy. If an attorney does not know what to do to obtain a good result, they likely will not get one. That is why our experience with thousands of clients and cases is so valuable. Also, if an attorney does not put in the work and effort, they will not succeed. Insurance companies and any person being sued will fight to avoid responsibility and to prevail, your attorney must be willing to fight back. Finally, you attorney must be honest with you and be someone you can trust. That will ensure that you have a trusted guide through the claims or litigation process, not someone you will have to follow up on or chase after.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
Local knowledge is extremely helpful. Cases in different areas are governed by different rules and courts in different jurisdictions have entirely different procedures. That is why our firm's experience in Maryland, Virginia and DC is so valuable to our clients. Moreover, when we handle cases from other areas, we routinely team up with attorneys located in that area. That allows the client to get the benefit of having us take the lead on their case and also know that someone with local knowledge is also on their team.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
In a free consultation, I usually have enough information to tell a client whether they have a case worth pursuing, whether they need an attorney, and what to expect should they pursue a case, based on the facts of their case, their injuries, and where and when their accident took place. I enjoy helping people understand the process and figuring out how best to proceed. Most clients are relieved and thankful after a free consultation because they feel more knowledgeable and less anxious.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
To help a client understand their options and how best to proceed, in a free consultation I need to obtain the date, time and location of the accident, as well as how it occurred, whether their were witnesses, whether the police responded and issued a report or any tickets, and the client's injuries and medical treatment to date. There are other factors that may also be relevant such as previous injuries and the insurance companies, if any, for the client and the other people involved. For malpractice cases, we may need additional information about the client's history. Free consultations do not take that long and can be extremely valuable for a client. I recommend calling an attorney as soon as possible.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
The biggest difference between our firm and others is our commitment to providing excellent client service. We have great experience and fight aggressivly, but all of that experience and effort must be dedicated to the client's needs and desires, not the attorney's. Too many firms are focused on their own schedules and forget that the client's satisfaction with a case and the result is the most important factor in obtaining a good result.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
The most rewarding aspect of my job is helping people who are facing physical and financial problems and stress through no fault of their own. They do not know what to do to get their life back and they may be intimidated by having to face an insurance company or other adverse corporation. It is extremely rewarding to get them the medical care and financial support they deserve and need. A happy and satisfied client is a great reward.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
In addition to practicing law, I teach law part-time at George Washington Law School. Currently, I teach two classes and am a faculty-advisor for an annual mock trial competition. Apart from law, I enjoy working out, playing guitar, and spending time with family and friends.
Are you involved in your community?
In addition to teaching law part-time, which I enjoy because I get to mentor and assist students, I am active in the Columbia Law School and Syracuse University alumni organizations. I also contribute my time and money to various causes, such as Habitat for Humanity, Special Olympics, and the Capital Area Food Bank.
