About Thomas
Tom Tate leads the Litigation Group of Andersen, Tate & Carr. Mr. Tate has a sophisticated commercial litigation practice focused primarily in the areas of eminent domain, zoning, intellectual property, contracts and other business litigation.
Mr. Tate graduated from The George Washington University in 1979, where he was an Academic All American, Captain of the varsity basketball team, and a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa honor society. Upon receiving his Juris Doctor degree in 1982 from the University of Michigan Law School, Mr. Tate joined the Atlanta law firm of Morris, Manning & Martin. In 1988, he moved his practice to Gwinnett County to help establish the firm now known as Andersen, Tate & Carr. Mr. Tate has a very active litigation practice, conducting jury and bench trials and arguing before appellate and trial courts on a regular basis. He has been lead counsel for landowners in some of the largest settlements and jury awards in condemnation actions in Gwinnett County history, most recently a $6 million settlement and a verdict for over $9 million in damages. Mr. Tate has been recognized as a Georgia Super Lawyer in 2009 and 2010 by Law & Politics, an award given to only five percent of the lawyers in the State of Georgia. Mr. Tate has been admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals, the Supreme Court of Georgia, and other federal and state courts, both in Georgia and other states. Mr. Tate is a member of the State Bar of Georgia, the Lawyers Club of Atlanta, the Gwinnett County Bar Association, and the Atlanta Bar Association. Mr. Tate has spoken frequently on legal issues, including continuing legal education seminars and the television show "The Layman's Lawyer." Since 1989, Mr. Tate has been given an "AV" rating by the Martindale-Hubbell National Legal Directory, the highest such designation given for both lawyer competence and integrity.
Mr. Tate is active in community activities, as well. He is a graduate of the 1992 class of Leadership Gwinnett, and is Past President of the South Gwinnett Rotary Club. Mr. Tate is past chairman of the Board of Directors for the Gwinnett Coalition for Health and Human Services, and also serves as 2010-2011 Campaign Chair for the Gwinnett Chapter of the Metro Atlanta United Way. He serves as coach for numerous youth sports teams, and is a member of Team in Training, which raises money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society through "endurance" athletic events.
