Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
If every case doesn't make a big difference, then you arent approaching the practice of law or serving your clients the right way.
How did you build a successful practice?
I was one of the few in my graduating class to start my practice upon graduation. I had worked as a law clerk for 7 years prior to graduating and was ready to hang my shingle on Lasalle Street. From there I realized on the business cards I collected along the way and the network - or the Rolodex in those days- that I filled. No job was beneath me, as I wanted to learn the entire profession, and discover what I was good at, and how I could best serve clients as a lawyer. Importantly, I looked at the top complaints about lawyers - many are still true today, such as not returning phone calls, arrogance, excessive fees, lack of communication, and I committed to do just the opposite.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
Honesty, transparency, communication, reasonable fees, personable and caring, and 100% invested in you as a client. And be darn good at what you hired him or her to do.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
100% important. There can be no shortcuts to knowing everything you need to know, and staying on top of the changes in the law, as well as the innovations and technology that serve clients best.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
Listening first, gaining a complete understanding of the client's needs providing the client with a sense you are the right lawyer for them, and letting them know precisely what you will do and when you will do it.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
Enough information to determine if I am the right lawyer and that I can deliver the best result.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
Communication, personable, down to earth, a provable reputation, skill, and someone who delivers.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
Working with people, and spending time getting to know them and their lives and producing a result that validates their choice in me as their lawyer and as their families lawyer in the future.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
Reading, writing, community work, mentoring, family, yoga, exercise, discovering innovative and new ways to work and play.
Are you involved in your community?
Yes, I founded Dreams for Kids in 1989, which recently merged and is now Dreams for Kids GCE Lab School and Learning Center. This is a project-based school, located in downtown Chicago where students learn by doing, visit businesses and public and private facilities and cultural centers. Students learn social entrepreneurship skills and create projects that impact their local and global communities.
