About Todd
Todd M. Sloan graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1961 and was immediately thereafter commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served in South East Asia in 1963 and 1968 both as an intelligence and infantry officer, and was awarded the Naval Commendation Medal (with Combat "V") and the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry for his service. He was released from active duty with the rank of major, retiring from reserve component as a lieutenant colonel.
After graduating from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1972, Sloan joined Hill, Farrer & Burrill, LLP in Los Angeles. In 1986, he joined the law firm of Bryan Cave and then in 1994 became a sole practitioner in Malibu, CA for eight years. Mr. Sloan joined the firm of Ross, Dixon & Bell, LLP in 2002. Mr. Sloan rejoined as Of Counsel to Hill, Farrer & Burrill LLP in August, 2007.
Mr. Sloan's practice areas include trade secret litigation, corporate governance litigation, banking litigation, coastal development and encroachment, Mexican law and courts, and general business matters.
Mr. Sloan taught Trial Practice and Conflicts of Law as an adjunct professor from 1988-2002 at Pepperdine University School of Law. From 2005 to the present he has taught a course on Trade Secret Law at the University of Virginia School of Law. He is a frequent continuing education lecturer on trade secret law, the Mexican legal system and coastal permitting and litigation. Mr. Sloan has written two articles, published in The Western State Law Review, on trade secret theory and litigation, and authored a monograph on defense of trade secret litigation, published by the American Bar Association section on Patent, Trademark and Copyright. He is a past member of the University of Virginia School of Law's Alumni Council and is currently an advisor to that organization.
