One matter that stands out involved helping a business navigate a significant transaction while managing legal, operational, and commercial issues at the same time. My role went beyond reviewing documents. I worked with the client and other professionals involved in the transaction to identify risks, negotiate key terms, and help move the deal toward closing. Matters like this reinforce that good business counsel requires understanding not only the law, but also the client's objectives and the practical consequences of each decision.

By focusing on relationships, responsiveness, and understanding how my clients actually operate. Over the years, my practice has expanded from intellectual property into broader business, contract, technology, and outside general counsel work because clients often need more than an answer to an isolated legal question. They need counsel who understands the business and can help them evaluate risk, opportunities, and the consequences of their decisions.

Competence and experience are essential, but clients should also look for judgment. A lawyer should understand the client's objectives, communicate clearly, identify the issues that actually matter, and distinguish between a theoretical legal risk and a risk that should materially affect a business decision. The best legal answer is not always the most complicated one.

It depends on the matter. In litigation and matters involving local courts, agencies, businesses, or practices, local knowledge can be extremely important. In transactional, intellectual property, technology, and business matters, the client's industry, commercial objectives, and applicable law may matter more than geography. Being licensed in both Louisiana and Texas also gives me perspective across two significant and distinct business environments.

An initial consultation is primarily an opportunity to understand the issue, identify the client's objectives, and determine whether I or LaBorde Legal Group may be able to assist. Depending on the circumstances, I can generally help identify the type of legal issues involved, discuss potential next steps, and explain what additional information or analysis may be necessary. A consultation is not a substitute for a full legal analysis, particularly before the relevant documents and facts have been reviewed.

I generally want to understand what happened, what the client is trying to accomplish, who the relevant parties are, whether there are important deadlines, and what agreements or other documents govern the situation. For a business matter, it is also helpful to understand the company, its ownership, the commercial relationship involved, and the practical outcome the client wants to achieve.

I approach legal problems from both a legal and business perspective. My background includes intellectual property, commercial contracts, technology, disputes, and advising businesses on operational and strategic issues. That combination helps me consider not simply whether something is legally permissible, but how a legal decision affects ownership, operations, negotiating leverage, risk, and long-term business value.

Helping people build, protect, and preserve something that matters to them. For a founder or business owner, a company may represent years of work, personal risk, jobs, relationships, and an important part of a family's economic future. For many, the opportunity to build something of their own, create economic independence, and leave something meaningful behind is part of the American Dream. Helping clients protect what they have created, solve difficult problems, and make better decisions about what comes next is the most rewarding part of the work.

My interests include business and entrepreneurship, technology, history, international affairs, travel, food and culture, and the study of institutions and governance. I also enjoy soccer and have been involved for many years in building and coaching a New Orleans-area amateur soccer club whose players have represented more than two dozen nationalities.

Yes. Community involvement has been an important part of my professional and personal life. I founded and coach Crescent City International Football Club, a New Orleans-area recreational soccer club built around competition, community, and bringing together people from different backgrounds. I have also remained involved with Pi Kappa Alpha alumni activities and have worked to reconnect alumni with the fraternity and one another. Professionally, I participate in legal and technology initiatives, including discussions concerning LegalTech, artificial intelligence, and the changing practice of law.
