Bill is admitted to practice in the state of Iowa, the U.S. District Courts for the Northern and Southern Districts of Iowa, and the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals. Bill has an undergraduate degree in Economics from the University of Iowa, graduating With Highest Distinction. He graduated from the University of Iowa College of Law in 1975, With Distinction. Bill is a long-term member of the American Association for Justice (formerly known as the American Trial Lawyers Association) and the Iowa Association for Justice (formerly known as the Iowa Trial Lawyers Association).

Bill and his wife have lived in Fort Dodge since 1977. They have two married daughters and two grandchildren. Bill has been active in community affairs and his church since his family moved to Fort Dodge. He is a past President of the Fort Dodge Community School District Board of Education, St. Olaf Lutheran Church Foundation, and Webster County Habitat for Humanity. He served many years on the Downtown Development Corporation and is a recipient of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Service Award. He is presently serving his second term as President of St. Olaf Lutheran Church Council.
