About William
My practice focuses primarily on the area of Education Law; specifically special education issues (due process hearings/complaints/disputes, non-compliance with IDEA, etc.) and student discipline matters, such as expulsion proceedings.
Every special needs student has the right to a free and appropriate education. Not an "ok" education, not "the best we can do given our resources" education - an appropriate education. I worked in public education for twelve years in a variety of capacities - classroom teacher, assistant high school principal, and high school principal. I've directly supervised every job classification involved in providing direct supervision and instruction of children.
I have a very thorough understanding of both the strengths and weaknesses of our education system. I absolutely believe that the vast majority of educators want the same thing that you want for your child; namely, a meaningful, appropriate educational experience that will prepare your child for future employment, further education, and independent living.
However, there are frequently systemic weaknesses that get in the way of achieving this objective. Educational decisions involving special needs students are greatly influenced by financial conditions within school districts, despite legal requirements to the contrary. Not only are placement decisions impacted; the allocation of financial resources also impacts the training that teachers receive to more effectively work with students that have special needs. When it comes to the special education services that your child receives, I can assure you that the squeaky wheel does indeed get the oil, so long as the squeaking occurs under the right circumstances and is heard by the right parties.
I have a great deal of experience with special education issues as well as disciplinary proceedings. I have participated in more special education staffings and disciplinary conferences than I could possibly count over the course of my career. My knowledge of the system as well as the law will be invaluable in our efforts to get your child the educational resources necessary to be prepared for future success.
