Questions & Answers
Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
My last trial was a drug case. The police stopped my client for having too great a tint on his car windows. They found a great deal of cocaine in the car, and he ran from the scene. He was found not guilty by a jury.
How did you build a successful practice?
I am AV rated and I know my reputation is very good. That helps a great deal because I can get very good deals for my clients since the whole DA"s office in Milwaukee knows I will try a case. I have had judges comment that my closing arguments should be videotaped and shown to all defense lawyers (e.g. after a trial for rape/homicide which had a 5 page written confession and the client was found not guilty). A lawyer's reputation as a fighter carries a great deal of weight throughout the proceedings. I have won major publicity-laden cases but I am against publicity for the lawyer. My job is to get the best result for the client and leave, not talk to the media. The greatest satisfaction?
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
Someone you feel comfortable with, and someone you observe getting the utmost respect when in court from the judge and the court personnel. Otherwise fire him/her. What information do you need in a free phone consultation? What is/are the charge(s)? Do you have a lawyer now? What stage of the proceeding, e.g. arraignment, pre-lim.? We also would have to discuss fees and the prospective client should be prepared to pay a retainer immediately, but I will at times accept payments after a substantial down-payment of the retainer. The client will receive a copy of a written contract to employ an attorney.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
36 years as a member of the Wisconsin Bar signals that I have done 100's of trials (and that is literal). I am particularly known in the Waukesha-Milwaukee area, but my practice is not limited to this area. I can also handle other types of cases but will not take a case if it's beyond my expertise. I will simply suggest other lawyers if that is wanted. I also have the ability to handle personal injury cases because I work with the lawyer across the hall who is so able he doesn't even advertise. Other lawyers secretly bring heir cases to him when the cases become too troublesome for them to handle. They advertise on TV but then let him settle the cases for them.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
Having someone literally fall to their knees in the hallway over thankfulness for a ""not guilty"". It's hard to not be moved.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
I have long-standing interest in both the martial arts and veteran's affairs , I was a veterans counselor when I got out of the Air Force.
