About William
Since the sale of Three Eye Sports in 2017, McCandless has focused on a varied practice which includes personal injury law, officers & directors and other professional malpractice, products liability, injuries to Americans and Canadians overseas, and employment law, with an emphasis on international sport arbitrations. Recently, McCandless settled a personal injury case for $1.2m for an American client who was injured in Indonesia. The case was complicated in that McCandless had to navigate the complexities of sharia law. The case took lots of effort to settle as McCandless shuttled back and forth between Asia and the US to make the defendants pay. Within the past month or so, in another car accident case, McCandless rejected a 7-figure offer for an auto accident victim. That case continues.
McCandless earned a BA in English from Trinity College in 1979. There he was President of the college’s Interfraternity Council, and played both varsity football and baseball, earning All-New England honors in football in 1980. He earned a Juris Doctor degree in 1982 at Hofstra University School of Law, where he was a Law Fellow and Editor-in-Chief of the International Property Investment Journal. After a career as a litigator in New York City and Portland,Maine, McCandless transitioned to the representation of players on a full time basis in 1990. He transitioned back to a law practice in 2017, when the sports agency was sold.
McCandless is married to Ursula Brown. He is the the father of four grown children and is grandfather to Olivia and Finn. McCandless believes in physical fitness and is a championship-level biking talent for his age bracket. McCandless believes that his clients deserve compassion and empathy, personal attention and excellent communication. While most lawyers handle fifty or more active files, McCandless's case load never exceeds fifteen active files.

Notable Work
Upon request
McCandless also handles tort litigation, including slip and falls, auto and truck accidents, medical and other professional malpractice, and product liability. Early in his legal career, he was Counsel for Lloyd's of London and other insurers and so he is positioned to represent plaintiffs in bad faith litigation involving insurers. As noted, in 2021, McCandless negotiated a $1.2 m settlement for an American who was injured in Indonesia. In connection with that case, McCandless shuttled between Singapore, Jakarta, Indonesia and Maryland (where the plaintiff resided).
Basketball Arbitral Tribunal (BAT) Legal Counsel
In the course of representing both American and foreign players internationally, McCandless has defended and prosecuted many BAT claims. He has also represented several American players in connection with FIBA’s prosecution of “doping” cases. In BAT, McCandless’s record is unblemished, and he has recovered thousands of dollars for American and non-American players. In all cases where McCandless has represented players facing FIBA doping suspensions, the length of suspensions were reduced.
Questions & Answers
Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
Over two years of back and forth, including trips overseas, I negotiated a $1.2m settlement for an American who was injured in Solo, Indonesia. This was no easy task given that there are no treaties between the US and Indonesia. There was no jurisdiction in US Courts because the Defendants lacked minimum contacts in the US. There was jurisdiction in Indonesia, but cases there are said to take years to get to trial, and when they do get to trial, the rich defendants might have had the upper hand in a system beset by corruption. So working around sharia law, and traveling thousands of miles for meetings, I was able to get my client $1,200,000 in record time.
How did you build a successful practice?
Honesty, integrity, hard work, relentlessness, kindness
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
Experience and talent. Good communication skills.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
Invaluable
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
In a free 45 minute consult, and assuming that the plaintiff provides full and accurate information, I can tell you what your case is worth and take steps to propose a plan of attack. If I take your personal injury case, you will pay nothing unless we win or otherwise settle the case.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
The facts and any evidence you might have in your possession. Precise and truthful detail. We can obtain medical records and the like in the course of any lawsuit, but in order to assess your case, I must have a solid picture of what happened and what injury followed..
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
I have fewer cases than most lawyers. I am selective in terms of taking on new business. This doesn\'t mean I don\'t take cases with values less than, let\'s say, $50,000. It simply means that I am able to pick and choose. This benefits the client because I\'m easy to reach, I work hard and I communicate.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
Seeing a client's eyes light up when I hand over settlement dollars!
What are your other interests in addition to law?
Pelaton, travel (have been to 81 countries), family, good food.
Are you involved in your community?
Yes, I am very active in both NYC and in Atlanta. I am a liberal and a life long democrat. I am a strong believer in tolerance!
