Questions & Answers
Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
We have represented several families over the past years or two who have lost a spouse/parent/father. Assisting these families in holding the negligent party responsible for causing the death of their loved ones and assisting those families with obtaining the financial resource and closure to move on with their lives is the most rewarding part of what we do. This has been espeicially gratifying when our clients are small children who are particularly vulnerable and needy at that stage of their lives.
How did you build a successful practice?
I believe the key to are success is listening to our clients and attempting to empathize with what they are going through. It seem simple, and it is. Many times it's easy to recognize a problem and identify a solution, but the people who come to see us have experienced traumatic, many times life-changing events. I feel as though they need someone to hear them and acknowledge their circumstances. Also, by taking the time to listen to our clients, we are in a much better position to communicate the devastation of their case to a judge, jury, mediator or insurance representative. I try and imagine what I would need if I were in our clients shoes, and then apply the golden rule.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
Selecting a lawyer is like selecting a healthcare provider. You need someone that is qualified to help you in the area you need help in. For example, you would not want a ear, nose and throat doctor performing surgery on your knee....i would not want a family law specialist representing me in a criminal case. If you have been injured in a motor vehicle accident, workplace injury or by a dangerous condition or production, you need an attorney that specializes in injury case. The State Bar of Texas grants board certifications to attorneys who have established experience in the field of personal injury law and who have passed a board certification exam. Also, attorney are rated by credible peer (judges and attorneys) review organization such as Martindale-Hubbell (the oldest), AVVO, and SuperLawyers. Online reviews may also provide insight into actual client experiences with a particular lawyer. All of those are excellent resources in selecting an attorney.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
Very important. If the lawyer has a good reputation in the legal community and the community in general that will benefit the case when it comes before the judge and jury. Knowing the customs in the area and how judges like matters presented and handled will allow your claim to proceed through the process quicker.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
Basic information about whether we might be the right lawyers for your case. I feel it is important to meet face to face to go over the details of the case and determine if we are a good fit for you and your case.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
Date of accident, types of injury, cost of medical bills, crash report, nature of injuries
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
We are local lawyers helping local people. We only represent people and never represent insurance companies, large corporate interest or the government. We are Ggraduates of Gerry Spence's Trial Lawyers College and are personal injury trial law specialist - that's all we do.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
Helping my clients get their lives back on track by holding wrongdoer's accountable for their bad acts.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
Spending time with my family, working in our angus cow/calf operation, upland bird hunting, riding Harley.
Are you involved in your community?
Channy is member and former board member of Will Rogers Range Riders, which is the oldest continually operating equine riding club in the nation. Members work to serve and support their community. Wood Law Firm is a regular supporter of Cal Farley's Boys Ranch, High Plains Childdren's Home, Heal the City, Junior League of Amarillo and other local charitable organization.
