Questions & Answers

How did you build a successful practice?

We have built a successful practice largely from the referrals of prior clients, their families and referrals from other attorneys. Our knowledge, compassion, empathy, focus on client communication and the excellence of our support staff are the core competencies that support our growth

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

Clients should select an attorney based on personal referrals from trusted friends and family, a review of the attorney's credentials and experience and a personal interview to test 'fit'- do the client and the attorney like and trust each other? Is the attorney's approach to a client what the client needs and wants? We provide further information on this topic in our brochures and on our website helmerlegal.com

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

Local knowledge can be important for some clients. Our firm wide footprint makes it very likely that one of our attorneys has knowledge of the local practices specific to the needs of almost al NJ clients

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

We provide limited information in a phone consultation as we believe that an in person meeting is most important in defining whether our firm is a good fit for a potential client.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

We require that you provide us with your name, contact information and the nature of your problem. If we are going to set up an additional consultation, depending on the nature of your problem, we required identifying information, often including date of birth and social security number, cell phone or home phone number and back up contact person if available. We of course keep this information strictly confidential. We will often ask you for your prior history of interactions with the legal system, to send us pictures of any tickets or documents that you may have related to your matter and for information on how you will be able to afford the services of our firm. WE do NOT accept probono referrals from this website. We DO work with clients in a variety of ways to make our services available to them.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

The most rewarding part of the job for me is helping clients and their families (who are typically in very difficult situations) to get the best possible result. I believe that people deserve to be treated in the way that I would like to be treated. By treating my clients and their families with concern, compassion and respect, I hope that I make their situation easier than it might otherwise be.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

My family is the most important thing in the world to me. I spend a lot of my non work hours with family and friends in a variety of activities including ballroom dance with my wife. I am a passionate animal lover and, as of the day of this questionnaire, I have 7 rescue cats and 4 dogs that I cherish and care for. In the few quiet moments, I love to read.

Are you involved in your community?

My firm colleagues and I are involved in our community in a variety of ways. I am a volunteer professor at the law school, support a number of non profits organizations in many ways and support the community outreach activities of my colleagues.
