Questions & Answers
Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
Recently, I was involved in an arbitration involving trademark and other intellectual property issues in which my client prevailed which can have huge implications for my client's business.
How did you build a successful practice?
My practice has mainly been built from referrals from past and existing clients.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
A lawyer who has sufficient experience in the area you need assistance in as well as a lawyer who is willing to be honest with the client and to let them know when they do not have a matter worth pursuing.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
Extremely important. Intellectual property, particularly patents, requires a great deal of experience as it is very complicated.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
I offer to listen to the client's description of their situation and guiide them as to what course of action they might potentially be able to take with a general cost estimate. I offer a free 20-30 minute consultation, in person or by phone or videoconference, to get into more detail about the client's situation and the path moving forward.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
It depends on the situation. If it is a dispute that might require a lawsuit, relevant details relating to the dispute. For a trademark or patent, for an initial phone conversation a general disclosure is necessary to help point the client into the direction to pursue and give a cost estimate. A more detailed discussion is sometimes needed to convey more information and a more accurate cost estimate.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
I have over 20 years experience in patents, trademarks, and other intellectual property. I both secure the issuance/registrations of these, litigate them and create agreements, which enables me to appreciate all aspects of the process, not just securing a patent or trademark registration. I also pride myself in being honest with my clients.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
I enjoy learning about new technologies and ideas. I also enjoy seeing clients have success with their ideas and businesses.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
I enjoy watching and playing various sports, hiking, and biking.
Are you involved in your community?
I have been involved with the Boy Scouts and my church.
