Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

I have had multiple cases where I saved the Estate thousands of dollars in creditor bills through negotiation and other strategies. I have drafted many estate planning documents designed to maximize protection of children, keep money and important decisions out of the wrong hands and reduce the likelihood of problems in the event of a serious injury, illness or death. I would say the biggest difference I make, however, is completing the probate process for clients who are struggling with the loss of their family member and very overwhelmed with everything that needs to be done. Many of my clients rely on me completely to deal with all of the practical issues that arise after a death in the family. Seeing the relief on a client's face when everything is done is the

How did you build a successful practice?

I find that honesty, good communication, hard work, compassion and strong ethics are essential to a successful practice. Clients should be able to trust their attorney, stay informed and have a good understanding of the process. An attorney should be able to explain things in an understandable way and have patience. When I first talk to a potential client, I focus on educating them about the process and their options. Every client should know what they are getting themselves into before they decide who to hire.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

Good communication, good reputation, open and honest about fees, focuses on that area of law, talks to the client as a peer/equal. Beware of attorneys that make guarantees or promises about a particular outcome in a contested matter. Beware of attorneys who refuse to explain why they charge what they charge.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

I will never promise any kind of ""leg up"" because I am familiar with the local judges, but it definitely can make a difference. Since every court has its own way of doing things, I find the process goes smoother when you are familiar with that particular court. For estate planning, I need to know about the potential clients assets, family and wishes.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

Since I focus on probate and estate planning, I have comprehensive and current knowledge and resources. I also have a great network of colleagues in this area when I need additional resources, opinions or support. I offer special accommodations for clients with mobility issues (e.g. home/hospital visits). I am willing to work with clients remotely when it is convenient for them. I consider myself to be more down-to-earth than many other estate planning attorneys. Many clients expect to be intimidated or talked down to, but my clients often remark how comfortable they are when they meet me. All of my clients receive my direct phone number. I respond to emails and phone calls.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

Taking the burden off someone who is really struggling with a loss, family situation or anxiety about the future. Nothing is more rewarding than improving the quality of someone's life. I have no delusions of grandeur about my impact on my clients' lives, but I do enjoy seeing the worry, distress, confusion and fear turn into peace of mind when the process is complete.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

My main interest is my family, including my dogs, Pumpkin and Maggie. I enjoy the outdoors, food, wine, reading and travel. I love to cook. My most consuming hobby at the moment is DIY home improvement and gardening.

Are you involved in your community?

I love to volunteer in the community. This year, I will be working with the San Antonio Food Bank Mobile Pantry, packing and distributing food to needy families while promoting healthy eating and exercise. Last year, I volunteered with the Clarity Child Guidance Center. I am an active member of the Junior League of San Antonio, Bexar County Women's Bar Association, San Antonio Bar Association, San Antonio Young Lawyer's Association and State Bar of Texas. I am on the board of directors for the Animal Defense League of Texas and Crime Stoppers of San Antonio. I also offer free presentations on estate planning to groups of 10 or more.
