About Andrew
Cuomo attended Archbishop Molloy High School in 1975, earned a B.A. from Fordham University in 1979, and received a JD from the Albany School of Law at Union University, New York in 1982.
Cuomo began his political career while attending law school, when he managed his father’s campaign. He was a NY assistant district attorney from 1984-1985, then worked at the law firm of Blutrich, Falcone & Miller. From 1990-1993, he chaired the New York City Homeless Commission.
In 1993, Cuomo joined the Clinton administration as the Assistant Secretary for Community Planning and Development in the Department of Housing and Urban Development. As HUD Secretary, Cuomo increased affordable housing, created jobs, and worked on economic development.
Cuomo joined the 2002 election for New York Attorney General, but dropped out to support Democratic front-runner Carl McCall, who ultimately lost to George Pataki. Cuomo ran again as a Democratic candidate in 2006, and won the election against Republican candidate Jeanine Pirro.
In 2010, Cuomo ran for governor of New York against Republican Carl Paladino. Cuomo won the election with 62.6% of the vote. In 2014, Cuomo ran for re-election against Republican Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino. As governor, Cuomo focused on the budget and passed legislation enabling same-sex marriage. He restructured the state’s tax code in 2011 and banned hydraulic fracturing in 2012. His administration enacted New York state’s first gun control law and made NY the 23rd state to legalize marijuana. The Cuomo Administration is planning to make higher education available for children of low-income families through the Excelsior Scholarship, which is part of the NY State 2018 fiscal year budget.
