Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
I encountered an elderly couple who had been injured badly by a drunk driver in a rear-end auto collision. The insurance company was pressuring them - almost to the point of harassment - to accept a nominal settlement, waiving their rights to further recovery. The high-pressure adjuster was making promises that the insurance company would pay any medical bills the couple incurred in the future that were related to the collision. This was, of course, a lie, as the insurance company would have dispensed with the couple at the moment they received the signed release. We were able to relieve the couple of the high-pressure insurance adjuster, help them quickly obtain the maximum available recovery, and even satisfy all outstanding medical charges on their behalf. The relief on their faces at the final signing was a solid reminder to me of how hard it can be for injured people to deal with the stress insurance companies press, and how important it is for them to find sound legal representation.
How did you build a successful practice?
I had made wide connections and gotten to know a lot of people in different walks of life from my life before the law. They knew me and trusted me and so they asked for my help with their legal problems. I worked hard for them and they referred more people to me. As time went on, I handled more and more intense litigation, including a significant number of jury and non-jury trials in state, federal and tribal courthouses all over the region. I had some success, and my reputation grew accordingly. I have advertised for brief periods, but now do so sparingly. The vast majority of my cases come from former clients and other attorneys - often those who have been opponents in previous cases.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
With almost 20 years of experience in civil litigation, criminal matters, state and federal appeals, and family matters, I have met people in all walks of life, seen a wide range of cases and practiced in several varied venues. Each have their own quicks and cautions. I also have had significant life experience outside of the law, to include the United States Marine Corps, running a magazine and working at a major metropolitan newspaper, I believe that legal and personal practice history is one of the key components when choosing an attorney - and I believe that a broad range of experience will often result in the best insight on how to address your specific legal needs.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
I was born in Tulsa, grew up primarily in Okmulgee and have lived in the general area for the majority of my life. My practice is almost exclusively through referrals. I have built a mutual respect with the Courts and other legal practitioners by hard work and a professional approach to addressing my client's legal needs. Accordingly, I know them and they know me - and that makes a significant difference in how we work toward resolution of the litigation.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
Best options for the client in moving forward and resolving their legal matter and how our law office can help.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
Subject matter of case; jurisdiction in which the case would be handled; individual identifying information about the parties involved in the legal issue, and an understanding of the general details (e.g. time, date and a broad outline of the allegations involved in the legal issue),
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
I have found that, early in my relationship with clients, I often hear them say, "That's the most anyone has ever explained to me about what's going on with my case", or "I've never heard anyone explain my situation that way." So, I believe that my broad life experiences, my solid education, and years and years of trying my best to help people walk away in a better place after meeting me than when they came in the door, have all helped me to communicate proficiently and efficiently with my clients about what they are facing, what their options might be, and what pitfalls potentially await them.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
Most people aren't seeking legal advice because something great is going on in their life. So, being able to help clients through the rough parts is the most rewarding.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
I love my God, my family, learning something new, meeting interesting people and rooting for the Oklahoma State Cowboys.
Are you involved in your community?
Mr. Allen is on the board of a Charitable organization called the Cross Bar Boys Ranch that helps trouble boys in a ranch setting including animal therapy.
