About Barry
Barry Hines began to practice law in 1972 with the firm of Barber & Barber in Springfield, Illinois. The firm later became Barber, Segatto, Hoffee & Hines. He established his sole practice in 2008. He attended law school at the University of Illinois College of Law, where he was awarded a Juris Doctorate. His undergraduate education was also at the University of Illinois, where he earned a B.S. in Accountancy. Mr. Hines today concentrates his practice in the areas of wills, trusts, estate planning and administration, as well as agricultural law and commercial real estate.
Mr. Hines has authored legal publications including Sales, Exchanges, Auctions of Farm Real Estate (1983), Overview of Probate (1984), Understanding and Planning for IRC 2057: It's Not Just for Farms (2001), and Election Law: Media and Broadcasting (2002), all for the Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education; Section 1031 Real Estate Exchanges (2005) for Lorman Education Services; and, Hot Topics in Agricultural Law (2008): Cash, Variable Cash, Production & Share Leases: Issues & Forms, Donald L. Uchtmann & Barry O. Hines, for the Illinois State Bar Association LawEd series.
Mr. Hines is experienced in contesting matters involving estates and real property issues and, earlier in his career, First Amendment matters. Cases in which he argued successfully before the Illinois Supreme Court and the Fourth District Illinois Appellate Court are:
Snyder v. Curran Twp. (1995), 167 Ill.2d 466, 657 N.E.2d 988, 212 Ill.Dec. 643 (Illinois Supreme Court ruled in favor of client that statutory immunity did not exempt the township from negligent sign placement);
John Carey Oil Co., Inc. v. W.C.P. Investments (1988), 126 Ill.2d 139, 533 N.E.2d 851, 127 Ill.Dec. 769 (Illinois Supreme Court ruled that client owner-operator of oil lease could impose statutory lien against co-owner);
Conner v. Copley Press, Inc. (1984), 99 Ill.2d 382, 459 N.E.2d 955; 76 Ill.Dec. 820 (Supreme Court ruled in favor of client newspaper in a defamation action);
Weaver v. Cummins (4th Dist. 2001), 323 Ill.App.3d 359, 751 N.E.2d 628, 256 Ill.Dec. 238 (Appellate Court ruled establishing an easement but denying the use the opposing party sought);
Bank One, Springfield v. Roscetti (4th Dist. 1999), 309 Ill.App.3d 1048, 723 N.E.2d 755, 243 Ill.Dec. 452 (Appellate Court ruled in favor of lender client on enforcement of personal guarantee of a commercial loan);
Sexton v. Marine Bank of Springfield (4th Dist. 1993), 247 Ill.App.3d 763, 617 N.E.2d 869, 187 Ill.Dec. 412 (Appellate Court ruled in favor of client and invalidated property deed);
