Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
A real estate development company client of mine was sued by a purchaser for fraud in connection with the sale of a $1,000,000+ commercial property. After months of negotiations with the purchaser (plaintiff) and his counsel, and with the various insurance companies providing coverage to my client during the relevant timeframe, I was able to broker a deal in which the purchaser and his counsel agreed to amend the claims in the lawsuit to trigger insurance coverage, and the various insurance companies providing coverage to my client agreed to defend the case and work towards a global settlement to protect the personal assets of my client.
How did you build a successful practice?
I believe the most important steps in building a successful practice are: 1) providing excellent legal representation to clients in the most efficient way possible, 2) responding to clients' needs/wants and providing them with candid/honest advice on what the possible outcomes are given the specific situations they are in, 3) providing aggressive pursuit of the clients' goals and interests, and 4) providing clients with a "personal touch" so they know they can always reach/talk to their lawyer whenever they need/want.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
Someone they can trust, someone they believe can accomplish their end goals, someone they can communicate with and that they feel comfortable enough with to discuss all aspects of their issues so that the lawyer can do his/her best job representing the client.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
Local knowledge is usually very important to the cases I handle, especially when it comes to knowing the local jurisdictions' law and procedural rules/requirements, opposing counsel, judges, current trends in local venues, and jury pool make-up.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
During a free phone consultation, I will try to provide a prospective client with as much information as I can, based on the information provided to me during the phone consultation, to help direct the client on what they should do next, whether that be to schedule an in-person meeting with me to discuss his/her case further, advise the prospective client that he/she needs to continue thinking about their potential claim before I can be of any further assistance, or to direct the prospective client to discuss their claim with another attorney or other professional.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
During a free phone consultation, I would like to find out as much information as is necessary to help me formulate an opinion as to whether I believe the prospective client has a matter worth pursuing, or if they are on the defensive side of the matter, whether they are involved in a matter that should be resolved quickly ""at all costs"" or whether the matter is one that should be litigated. That could include the names of the parties involved in the issue(s), the key factual or legal issues involved, and what the prospective client is trying to achieve.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
Excellent client service and satisfaction are my number 1 goals. I have lived my entire life in the Kansas City area, I attended the University of Kansas for both undergraduate and law school, and I am very active in the local community. I understand what it is to have ""Midwest values"" and have tailored my practice accordingly. My entire 19+ year legal career has been spent representing individuals and local/regional small to mid-size businesses in a variety of legal matters with an exceptional track record of successful outcomes for my clients, whether that be through pre-suit negotiations all the way to arguing their case before the state/federal courts of appeal.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
Obtaining the sought-after resolution of a matter for my client in the most efficient and effective way possible.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
My family is very important to me - wife and 3 young daughters. I love spending time with them at home, at their various activities, or doing ""fun family stuff"". I also enjoy riding motorcycles, playing poker, attending sporting events and concerts, traveling, and spending time with friends.
Are you involved in your community?
I belong to and actively attend all local bar association events (Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association, Johnson County Bar Association, etc.), I am an active volunteer/participant in my local synagogue and other Jewish organizations/events, I fund raise each year for the March of Dimes through the local Bikers for Babies charity event, and for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society during their annual Light the Night Walk charity event.
