About Nathan

My foray into the legal field was somewhat unorthodox and it is because of this that I often provide my clients with a unique perspective on a wide range of personal and business matters.  I hold an Honours Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science from the University of Toronto in the areas of Mathematics and Statistics. After completing my undergraduate and graduate studies, I began working full time in the automotive and real estate sectors and was involved in countless commercial transactions and negotiations.

Thereafter, I returned to academia and was conferred the degrees of Juris Doctor and Master of Business Administration from Osgoode Hall Law School and the Schulich School of Business at York University and went on to work at one of “the big Bay St. firms”.

Wanting more control over my files, I eventually made the decision to open my own firm. I am now able to work with a diverse group of individuals and businesses to help them with their various legal needs. My main areas of focus are Plaintiff-Side Personal Injury Litigation and Employment Law; however, I have am also regularly retained on Family and Civil Litigation matters as well. .

Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

I always strive to achieve timely, cost effective solutions to legal issues. I regularly engage in alternative dispute resolution before resorting to litigation in an effort to get matters resolved. I recently managed to settle a wrongful dismissal file in less than a month as a result of engaging in thorough negotiations with my client's former employer. At the end of the day, my client received her termination/severance much faster than resorting to the courts and engaging in an adversarial process. My client ended up with more money in her pocket in a much shorter period of time.

How did you build a successful practice?

I maintain my practice by being a zealous advocate for my clients. I am passionate about the clients I choose to work with and am deeply invested in resolving their legal issues.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

Clients should seek a lawyer whos practice is aligned with their goals. They should consider a lawyer that will canvas all possible avenues of resolution for their matter. Look for a lawyer that understands the local legal landscape and has experience in the that particular practice area.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

Local knowledge is essential to success. Knowing the members of the local bar goes a long way towards resolution as does understanding local practice directions which vary from region to region. The rules can vary greatly from province to province, and municipality to municipality, so hiring local counsel that has in-depth knowledge is essential!

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

I provide free 30 minute phone consultations for all of my potential clients. This purpose of this consultation is not to provide legal advice, but instead, to get a better understanding of your legal issue and advise if I would be able to assist you in your matter. The consult is also an opportunity for you to ask me any questions about my practice and ascertain if I am the lawyer you would like representing you.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

The information required for a consult varies depending on the type of matter. But generally, an overview of the facts is all that is required to help understand what your potential claims are. The Law Society of Ontario also requires that client identification be obtain to ensure that there is no conflict of interest - to that end, some personal information is required prior to the consult.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

I am a sole practitioner with a strong history of results-oriented strategies. I have come to the legal world from a somewhat atypical background which includes graduate studies in mathematics and statistics. My extensive education in scientific process and rigourous analysis, coupled with the critical thinking skills of my law degree, allow me to provide a unique perspective on legal issues.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

Achieving results for clients. The vast majority of my practice is working with plaintiffs who have suffered damages at the hands of others. Successfully seeking compensation for these individuals and corporations is why I do what I do.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

I am, unfortunately, an diehard Leafs fan. When the trials and tribulations of a legal career are not enough, I know I can always count on the Leafs for that extra push! I am also an avid scotch and whisky collector.

Are you involved in your community?

I many occasions, I have engaged in pro-bono legal services for various organizations within the Durham region. If you are operating a not-for-profit in the Durham region, please feel free to reach out to me and I would be happy to discuss your legal issue with you.
