Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

The client had been charged with possession of stolen property and it was clear that the Crown was not willing to make any concessions. However, after clearly reviewing the charges it was clear that the Crown did not have a case and the charges were withdrawn. On another matter, the client had been sued as a third party on a small claims matter. After minimal discussions with counsel for the other side, the claim against my client was discontinued without costs.

How did you build a successful practice?

Word of mouth plays a significant role. The main factor however, is that my practice is built on the premise of developing personal relationships with clients, identify their type of personality and seek the greatest potential outcome to their matter, while maintaining a congenial approach with the client.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

An individual who will work as hard as possible to reach the best possible outcome, as well as an individual who can be counted a) to talk to on a personal level, as well as b) one who will be as responsive as possible to their phone calls or concerns. Too often I hear of individuals who fail to hear a response from their counsel within days of contacting them. I endeavor to return phone calls or correspondence within that particular day and, as often happens, within a few hours of their calls.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

Not particularly, however, it is beneficial to know the crowns or other counsel involved in matters and this can be of some significance.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

That depends on the type of matter at hand. In criminal matters, very little One needs to be able to review disclosure, sign designations and prepare for the first matter. In civil matters, much more information can be provided. Whether there is a cause of action, whether there are issues with respect to limitation issues and ultimately, whether it is worthwhile pursuing a clients' matter can be determined based on a phone call.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

I work at reasonable rates, am honest, hard working and personable. Most counsel are unable to identify with their clients in any meaningful way and I do not suffer from any such difficulties.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

Observing a client that is happy and/or satisfied with obtaining the best result possible.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

Watching soccer and hockey, playing golf, reading, and spending time with my family and girlfriend

Are you involved in your community?

Yes, I have spent considerable amounts of time volunteering for a variety of organizations, mostly related human rights.
