About Carl
Since graduating from Whittier Law School in 1992, Mr. Botterud has represented hundreds of corporate and individual clients in all phases of complex employment, business and criminal matters in state and federal court. With more than thirty years experience as a lawyer and business executive, Mr. Botterud has litigated extensively on behalf of his clients at all levels, from discovery and the taking and defending of hundreds of percipient and expert depositions, through appearances in countless contested court hearings, mediations and arbitrations, to the handling of scores of trials and appeals before both the state and federal courts. In particular, Mr. Botterud has tried fifteen civil and criminal cases to verdict, including four murder trials. He briefed and argued multiple civil and criminal appeals and writs before the California Court of Appeal.
Recognizing the burdens and costs involved in protracted litigation, Mr. Botterud, early in his career, came to value alternative forms of dispute resolution. After receiving specialized training from The Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution at Pepperdine University in 2006, Mr. Botterud started working as a mediator to serve his colleagues in efforts to seek resolution of conflict. Mr. Botterud has served as a neutral in over seventy mediations involving employment, construction, contract, disability and general civil disputes, and shortly garnered a sterling reputation as a calm, no-nonsense and compelling mediator who can successfully resolve even the most hotly contested matters. Dedicated to public service, Mr. Botterud previously served on the Los Angeles County Superior Court Pro Bono and Select Mediator Panels.
Most recently, from 2010 to 2013, Mr. Botterud served as General Counsel at his alma mater, Occidental College. During that tenure, he helped guide his client through issues with an eye toward efficient, cost effective risk management. Mr. Botterud successfully guided the College through a novel tax litigation matter resulting in significant savings for his client. He worked closely with the athletic department in addressing an NCAA investigation. He regularly provided counsel and guidance related to construction, contract, employment, faculty, and civil rights matters.
In the fall of 2013, Mr. Botterud returned to Ritt, Tai, Thvedt & Hodges, the firm he helped steward as a partner from 2000 to 2005, where he is serving his clients and colleagues as a counselor, workplace and higher education investigator, and mediator. Mr. Botterud has completed significant Title IX investigation training through T9 Mastered, ATIXA, and most recently, completed the "Trauma-Informed Sexual Assault Investigation and Adjudication Institute" with the National Center for Campus Public Safety.
