About Charles

My name is Charles M. Kunz and I am an attorney. I currently work as the managing attorney of Kunz Law, PLLC which is my own practice. My practice focuses on criminal defense, family law and immigration law but works in other areas as well including Will preparation, collections and landlord/tenant law. I was previously Of Counsel and a Staff Attorney with the nonprofit D.E.A.R. Foundation in Raleigh where I practiced immigration law with a focus in removal defense work. I have extensive trial experience in the Charlotte and Atlanta Immigration Courts as well as in state level District, Superior, Small Claims and Family Court. I travel throughout the southeast practicing immigration law including immigration bonds and individual hearings (trials). I also have handled appeals before the Board of Immigration Appeals and worked with adoption law legislation as the Legal Fellow for the Center for Adoption Policy. Prior to law school I worked for six years in sales and customer service environments in the rental car and electrical supply fields. Immediately prior to starting school I was a 911 operator and police dispatcher for the Durham Police Department.

Questions & Answers

How did you build a successful practice?

Networking. It's a cliche but building a strong network is vital. It's important to have contacts in other parts of the state who can help you with local matters when needed and who will send you leads and referrals and business for your part of the state.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

Someone who understands the lawyer's role. The lawyer has to be honest at all times with his or her clients even when that means telling them things they don't want to hear. The lawyer also has to understand that it's the client who decides the direction that the case will go in. The lawyer can provide advice and counsel but always must make the decisions based on a complete picture which the lawyer has to provide.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

What direction the case can take, an idea of the possible outcomes, a general idea of the cost of representation and the number of work hours involved.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

An honest review of the situation from the client. The client should always remember that a good lawyer will never judge them but a lawyer is only as good as the information he or she receives so the client must be forthcoming.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

I am well traveled. I've practiced in 78 North Carolina counties and in ten states as I do immigration defense work around the country.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

Making a real difference in people's lives.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

I travel for leisure frequently. I play competitive poker. I spend time with my family. I like to read and write short stories. I love to grill and to try new restaurants.
