Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
I represented two children in a juvenile deprived proceeding that resulted from findings that my twelve year old female client had been habitually raped and beaten by her natural father from the age of six years old. Further investigation substantiated that both children had been beaten and maimed routinely. The State filed the appropriate criminal case, but (as sex crimes tend to be heavily based on the testimony of the victim) there was a lot of concern that the jury would not find the testimony of the girl credible. There was physical evidence, but it was scant. Now, I am a criminal defense attorney. But in this case, I heavily aided the state in the development of their case. They institutionalized both of my children, as one might expect. The first jury hung up - on my client's thirteenth birthday. The second trial resulted in a conviction and a sentence that will keep this man in prison for the rest of his life. I filed a relative guardianship on behalf of the children, and they are safe, loved and thriving. My greatest case was not a case a case I file an entry of appearance on. But I still consider it a victory.
How did you build a successful practice?
I did it the hard way. I did it from the ground up. I took cases that no one else wanted. I worked for free to gain experience. I asked every attorney I could to allow me to help on cases they had. I listened to people who knew more than me, and I have applied what I have been taught. I hire staff that is loyal, hard-working and have the same ideals that are important to me. I believe my business has grown because people know how hard we'll work for them.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
Honesty and candor. Attorneys that tell their clients only what they want to hear are not doing their clients any favors.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
Indispensable. I was born and raised in Antlers, Oklahoma. My family is multi-generational residents of south east Oklahoma. I believe one of the reasons I have had so much success in jury trials is my familiarity with the people, the families, and the mindset of my fellow citizens.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
Very limited. I usually only obtain and provide enough information to determine the nature of the claim, and a price range for a quote. When it comes to ""answers,"" the devil is in the details. I am hesitant to make any recommendations until I am able to sit down with the client and have an in depth conversation.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
I am a young lawyer and I often feel that I am not as set in my ways as some of my colleagues. I am more inclined to buck the system. I seem to be more willing to take certain risks. I am more energetic. And most importantly, I am still trying to make a name for myself. I am hungrier.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
I love knowing I went after something with everything I have, and leaving it all out on the courtroom floor. Win or loss - I love the fight.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
Everything. I love music, literature, science, and the arts. My goal in life is to start my non-profit organization, The Sunday Girl Foundation, which will promote the sciences, the arts, and self-sufficiency living. I am also deeply involved in Veteran's rights.
Are you involved in your community?
Yes. I am a member of the rotary club, and many other organizations. I am always involved in the school. I am very active with the VFW. We are involved with juvenile delinquents in state's custody. I don't do this for advertisement or to be patted on the back. I am a small town girl, and I believe it is my responsibility to leave my community better than I found it.
