About Chris

Chris Christie is the 55th governor of New Jersey. He earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Delaware in 1984 and a J.D. from Seton Hall three years later.

Christie, born in Newark, NJ, enrolled at the University of Delaware in 1980. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in political science in 1984, and then earned a J.D. from Seton Hall University School of Law in 1987.

In 1987, Christie joined the New Jersey State Bar Association and the Bar of the United States District Court, District of New Jersey. He practiced law from 1987 through 2002, beginning his career in 1987 at the law firm of Dughi, Hewit & Palatucci in Cranford, NJ. He became a partner at the firm in 1993, focusing on appellate, election, and securities law, and expressing interest in government affairs.

Governor Christie transitioned from law to politics in the early 1990s. He volunteered for President George H.W. Bush's re-election campaign in 1992, and in 1994 was elected to the Board of Chosen Freeholders in Morris County, NJ. Christie continued his career in Morris County politics until 1998, then returned to a full time legal career at Dughi, Hewit & Palatucci. In 2000, Christie was George W. Bush's campaign lawyer for New Jersey.

In 2001, Christie accepted George W. Bush's nomination for US Attorney for the District of New Jersey. He was confirmed by the U.S. Senate in 2001 and took office in January 2002. At the attorney's office, Christie was the Chief Federal Law Enforcement Officer from 2002-2008. There, he focused on combating public corruption, noting prosecution of the planners of the 2007 Fort Dix attack as a career highlight. He also joined the Advisory Committee of US Attorneys General John Ashcroft and Alberto Gonzales.

Following his stint as Attorney General, Christie became governor of New Jersey in 2010. During his first year, Christie cut pension benefits for public employees and instituted income-based tax cuts. The following year, Christie approved tax credits for parents with children in private and parochial schools. He also tightened tenure laws for teachers. In 2013, the governor revamped New Jersey's business tax incentive programs and added nearly $100M to the state's school funding pool. He also vetoed bills to raise minimum wage, improve farm animal welfare, and legalize same-sex marriage in New Jersey.

Christie won a re-election campaign later in 2013, and will be New Jersey' governor until January 2018. His second term has been highlighted by the highly publicized Fort Lee incident. Christie joined the race for US presidency in 2016, but dropped out later in the year and endorsed Donald Trump.
