About Cynthia
Cynthia Shumate is of counsel in Merchant & Gould's Seattle Office. Ms. Shumate has more than sixteen years of experience providing patent strategy and counseling to various biotechnology companies with a particular emphasis on patent prosecution strategies, life cycle management strategies, IP due diligence analysis, particularly analysis of competitor patents and providing defensive and offensive IP strategies or design around positions for those companies. Cynthia has considerable experience advising clients in a variety of biotechnological and biopharmaceutical technology fields, including protein modification, monoclonal antibody therapeutics, in particular to treat cancer and autoimmune diseases, protein vaccines, adjuvant technology, and dna diagnostics.
Cynthia joins the firm from Allozyne, a Seattle based venture backed biotechnology company engaged in the development and commercialization of protein therapeutics. As the company's general counsel, she was responsible for among other things, all intellectual property and transactional related matters.
Prior to Allozyne, Cynthia was the vice president, legal affairs, secretary and chief compliance officer at PDL BioPharma, a publicly traded biopharmaceutical company which pioneered the humanization of monoclonal antibodies for targeted treatments for cancer and autoimmune diseases. Before PDL BioPharma, Cynthia was associate general counsel at Corixa Corporation (purchased by GlaxoSmithKline), a biotechnology/pharmaceutical company based in Seattle, Washington involved in the development of immunotherapeutics to combat autoimmune diseases, infectious diseases, and cancer. Before Corixa, Cynthia was a patent attorney with two other biotechnology companies located in the Seattle area, Cell Therapeutics and NeoRx Corporation, now Poniard, where she prepared and prosecuted US and foreign biotechnology patent applications.
