Salas v. Hi-Tech
Plaintiff is granted a new trial from Washington State Supreme Court. Mr. Kornfeld won the case at that level for Mr. Salas. He was granted a new trial. Admission of immigration status was prejudicial. After the first jury trial resulted in an award of zero (0) dollars, a second jury trial commenced after the supreme court ruling ranting a new trial. Before the second jury trial, there was no offer pretrial by the insurer for the defendant. Even after a settlement conference with a judge, who recommended a settlement of $850,000, no money was offered by the insurance carrier. The second jury trial resulted in a plaintiff's jury verdict in favor of Alex Salas in the amount of $2,590,000.00.

Questions & Answers
Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
There was a case Salas v. HiTech Erectors in which the Washington Supreme Court ruled that evidence of my client's immigration status was not admissible and granted us a new jury trial. Since this historic ruling, there are new evidence rules in Washington state that evidence of immigration is no longer admissible in a civil case. At our second jury trial, after a previous defense verdict, the jury returned a verdict of $2,590,000. My client and his family received justice and compensation for life long disabling orthopedic injuries to the father, our client.
How did you build a successful practice?
I went out on my own in 1982 and have been in private practice since. In August 2006 we formed our personal injury law firm.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
I lawyer who has experience trying civil jury trials, is someone who you can trust and connect to, someone who is hard working and has great results. There are a lot of good personal injury lawyers so keep looking!
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
A trial lawyer in your region is desirable.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
Within 10 minutes usually I can get a great lay of the land and understand your case.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
The following: 1) who is the target defendant(s) 2) why were they at fault? 3) what are you injuries and damages caused by this event? Past and future medical and wage loss, permanent injuries and problems, restrictions and limitations you now have.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
This is an easy question. There are a lot of great trial lawyers. But what differentiates me from the pack, aside from great results, is that in July 1985 I too was seriously injured in a MVA and after over 11 surgeries, I recovered. I understand and get what you are going through and will zealously represent you if I take your case.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
Having my client tell me ""thank you"" and ""I appreciate all that you have done for me and my family"".
What are your other interests in addition to law?
I love to ski, skate ski, golf, ride road bikes and mountain bikes, hike and hope to get back out on the ice again to skate.
Are you involved in your community?
For years I have been a member of the Bellevue Police Foundation raising money to support our local law enforcement and pro bone legal services.
