Dan is a native Texan and served in the United States Army from 1983 to 1989. He entered the military as a Second Lieutenant and achieved the rank of Captain. He trained at the U.S. Army Infantry Airborne School at Fort Benning, Georgia, earned his Parachutist Airborne badge, and was the Honor Graduate of the Joint Deployment Officer's Course. He was awarded the Army Achievement Medal, Army Commendation Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal.

Dan has been married to Jeri Lynne Worthington since 1985 and they have three children, William, Matthew and Danielle.
