Questions & Answers
Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
Religious discrimination case where a student was retaliated against for refusing to say the pledge on religious grounds. Walked an employee through a situation where she was being discriminated against at work and, without litigation, was able to obtain concessions from the employer which in turn saved her job and in which she later was promoted.
How did you build a successful practice?
I chose, as my major focus of practice, an area of the law that was not overly populated with attorneys, e.g. employment law. Because of the nature of the employment laws in Florida, and the fact that there are just not many protections, there are only a few attorneys who practice in the same area of the law. I also networked, and consistently provided free consultations to prospective clients and other attorneys. I have had the same phone number for over 20 years and still have clients from a decade or more ago calling for assistance.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
Someone who is going to be responsive (actually return calls within a reasonable time and not have an assistant do it), available, and empathetic. Also, have a commitment to the process and work as hard as it takes to provide the maximum level of expertise and service.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
Not as important as it once was. The rules have become more uniform, especially in federal court, and the judges are so used to having out of town counsel on cases, and many times the judges are themselves someone who was once from "out of town," that local knowledge is less and less a factor.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
Whether I believe the situation in which the client finds themselves is one in which I can provide meaningful assistance. If I don't think there is a relatively positive chance of success, no matter how resolute the client may seem, I try my best to convince them that they should not pursue the matter.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
Basically what the core facts are that they have knowledge of that makes them think they have a matter which needs the attention of an attorney.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
I have also provided free consultations. To my understanding there is not another employment lawyer in Jacksonville who does. I pay little attention on how other lawyers conduct themselves and I would not presume to try to differentiate myself from others. My focus is to be as available, understanding and honest with my clients as I can be.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
When I can make a positive difference in someone's life by using my legal skills to their best advantage.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
Yoga, meditation, theater arts, film, outdoor activities, e.g. downhill skiing, cycling, and home exercise.
Are you involved in your community?
Through my interests in theater, yes.
