Background

Attorney David MacKusick's practice is devoted exclusively to federal criminal defense and federal tax litigation.  Since graduating from Emory Law School in 1997, he has worked as a public defender in Fulton County, as a staff attorney with the Office of Chief Counsel for the Internal Revenue Service, and as an associate attorney at the largest tax litigation firm in the Southeastern United States.  Since 2003, he has been a sole practitioner, representing clients in federal criminal cases and federal tax litigation from his South Atlanta law office.  He has been quoted in The Atlanta Journal Constitution, USA Today, and The Wall Street Journal and has appeared on television on The Layman's Lawyer. 

Federal Criminal Defense Experience

He has had several federal criminal cases dismissed, saving his clients the uncertainty of a jury trial.  While the best result is a dismissal of all charges, it is important that the government knows that your lawyer is not afraid to go to trial.  Attorney David MacKusick has tried many federal criminal jury trials in the past five years and has represented more than a dozen clients on appeal to the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals.  He understands the federal sentencing guidelines and how to successfully argue for a more lenient application of the sentencing guidelines to his client's case.  He has saved his clients hundreds of years in prison, and in many cases he has successfully argued for probation or house arrest instead of prison.

 Education

Attorney David MacKusick graduated from Clayton State University in Morrow, Georgia with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting, magna cum laude, in May 1994.  He graduated with distinction from Emory Law School in May, 1997.  While studying at Emory, Attorney David MacKusick was a managing editor of The Emory International Law Journal where he published Human Rights vs. Sovereign Rights:  The State Sponsored Terrorism Exception to the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act, 10 Emory Int'l L. Rev. 741 (1996), an article about the rights of individuals to sue foreign governments for terrorist acts.
