Questions & Answers
Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
I successfully represented a woman seeking asylum in the U.S. She is from Central America and was pursuing an advanced degree in law when she was targeted by the gangs. She was attacked multiple times physically and her son was injured as well before she escaped and came to the US. We successfully argued that based on her gender and her pursuit of a future in the law that she was persecuted.
How did you build a successful practice?
I have built my practice over the years by being honest and forthcoming with my clients even if the information I give them is not always what they want to hear. I take pride in doing the best we can for each situation and trying our hardest to achieve the desired outcome. This philosophy has brought clients back at each stage of their lives and has ensured that they refer other clients as well.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
I believe clients should be able to trust their attorney and understand what is going on in their case. In immigration law, a client's case is their life and if if they do not understand what is going on and believe in their attorney it is much harder to ensure the desired outcome.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
In the field of Immigration we deal with federal law, however knowledge of local policies and practices is imperative. Knowing the officer that will review a case, a government attorney who you will be up against in court and the judges make such a difference in whether or not we will be successful.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
During our consultations we obtain as much information as we can to analyze the case and make a preliminary determination about how best we can assist a potential client. Immigration is a very complex area of the law and no two cases are the same, it is very important to evaluate a case based on the specific facts for each client. During a phone consultation we will do our best to evaluate if we think there is anything that can be done and as we move forward we will get more into the details to figure out how best we can serve our clients.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
The basic information we need for an initial consultation is: who the client will actually be, where they are from and what their immigration status is. It is also helpful to know when the entered the US if they are foreign born, and if they have had any contact with immigration. Also, if they have an alien (A#) that is very helpful.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
Once again, I take pride in being honest and forthcoming to my clients, and I want them to understand their case. I care very much about each and every one of them and know that this is their life and they need to be a part of their case to achieve the best possible outcome.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
The most rewarding aspect of my job is making a difference in the lives of my clients. Each and every one of them is seeking a better future and to be a part of that is one of the greatest blessings. To know that I had some part in a person achieving a goal or dream of theirs is so rewarding.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
In addition to practicing law I love to travel. Seeing other parts of the world and learning about other cultures and people gives me such pleasure.
Are you involved in your community?
I am involved in a literacy program for immigrant women in my community, I am also on the Board of an organization for Immigration Defense Attorneys and active in the local bar association. I am also active in the social ministry at my church and part of the missioners committee.
