About Deke
Every case is different, but my approach to each case is the same - to obtain the absolute best result for the client. If the case is in its investigation stage, then the goal is to explore every avenue to prevent any criminal charges against the client. This website lists Representative Cases for the firm. However, that list represents clients who have taken their cases to trial and won. Many of our clients are never charged, and I consider that a better result than a Not Guilty verdict at trial. For obvious privacy reasons, clients who have never been charged do not want their names posted on our website.
Unfortunately, some clients already have criminal charges when they come to our firm. Family members often come to us for help because their loved one is in jail facing charges neither they nor their family understand. The whole process is confusing, and the government can be intimidating. I'll go to bat for you. I'll explain everything to you fully and guide you through the process.
If you are facing criminal charges, ultimately it is your choice of whether you want to negotiate an agreement with the prosecution or take your case to trial. If you decide to go to trial, I have a strong record in front of juries. My clients have been found Not Guilty in state and federal courts, in cases ranging from murder, to firearms, to fraud. Take a look at the Representative Cases on this website if you are interested in some of my past trials.
The success I have achieved in the courtroom has carried over into my practice. I serve as a Council Member of the Criminal Justice Section of the North Carolina Bar Association. I am a charter member on the Board of Directors for the Federal Defender's Organization for the Western District of North Carolina. I have also given lectures on jury selection to other attorneys for the North Carolina Bar Association.
On a personal note, I grew up in Statesville, NC, and attended Statesville Senior High School. I went to college at UNC-Charlotte, and played on the school's rugby team. I attended law school at UNC-Chapel Hill and I'm a devoted Tar Heel fan. I am married and my wife is a practicing tax attorney in Charlotte.
