Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

Successfully defended a major Stevedoring company against a claim that they had damaged some very expensive cargo. I also defeated the Limitation of Liability action brought by Bald Head Island, in their attempt to limit the damages to five passengers badly injured when they ran their ferry aground. The federal court awarded summary judgment against Bald Head Island in our favor. Lastly, I prepared estate plans for three clients on-site at the hospital or hospice, protecting valuable assets and the intent of the clients. Yes, we make house calls.

How did you build a successful practice?

We have never put the dollar before our client's interests. They know that, and trust us to help them make the biggest decisions in their lives. Eventually, that gets around. We have experienced natural, organic growth over the last 30 years without advertising.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

Candor, and Effort. Your lawyer is like your parent. They know some things better than you do, and you need to hear it. That's Candor. Any lawyer can research the law, but few, it seems, take the time to do so and get you the right answer. That takes Effort.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

Local knowledge means knowing not only who the actors are, but why they are acting the way that they do. You need that to settle a case.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

We often turn clients away after full answering all of their questions on the phone. That ultimately saves both of us time, and is a great deal for the client. We think this benefits everyone, and will bring the client back the next time their issue cannot be so easily resolved.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

Opposing party's names, nature of case, and what they think the issue is.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

Candor, Effort and Dedication. I occasionally hear about the advice some clients have received from lawyers in the area - advice that was either not candid, or given in a ""drive-by"" fashion without having taken the time to get the right answer. We hope this extra effort puts us in the upper echelon of legal services. Being our client means having our dedication to resolving their needs. Our clients have our 24/7 numbers, and use them. Being our client means the right to make ""unreasonable"" requests. We are there to satisfy them, and we do.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

Client satisfaction is the most rewarding part of this job. That means a ""win-win."" Knowing that I saved the client money or gave them great advice they acted upon is a close second.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

Tennis, UNC Basketball, Foreign languages, foreign travel, cooking, bible study.

Are you involved in your community?

Very much. I sit on the board of various nonprofits, including the Lifeline Pregnancy Center, which does excellent work. I sat for years on the Cape Fear Literacy Council as well.
