About Edgar
Edgar (Ed) Callaway is an experienced battle tested criminal defense attorney whose practice focuses primarily on criminal law in the Superior, State, and Juvenile Courts of Georgia. He also handles divorce, custody, contempt, and adoption cases, business, contract and property disputes, and personal injury and wrongful death cases.
Ed is a Georgia native who grew up in Covington. After college he served in the Army before attending and graduating from Mercer Law School in Macon. Early in his career he served as an assistant district attorney in the Lookout Mountain Circuit where he learned how police and prosecutors operate and what it takes for a prosecutor to win. Eventually Ed left the office and entered private practice and became a criminal defense and civil trial attorney.
In 2000 he joined the Newton County Public Defender's Office. During his six years there he handled approximately 5,000 cases. A great number of Ed's cases were serious major felonies such as aggravated child molestation, statutory rape, felony child abuse, armed robbery, murder, kidnapping, burglary and drug trafficking and sales. He also handled cases of theft, shoplifting, domestic violence, dui, traffic, drug possession, resisting arrest, probation violation and juvenile delinquency. Despite this enormous caseload he obtained favorable or satisfactory results for almost all of his clients, many of whom received dismissals or pretrial diversion. Others were given first offender sentences while some pled guilty to reduced charges and lesser sentences than originally recommended. Many of his clients wanted jury trials and Ed won more than his fair share for them.
Ed is not intimidated by overzealous prosecutors or pro prosecution judges. He is not afraid to go to trial for a client with a difficult or unpopular case like child molestation or assault of a police officer. He will give his all in trial.
