Questions & Answers
Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
My client had state tax debts dating back from the 1980s, which precluded him from getting a drivers license, vehicle registration, or the professional license he needed to rebuild his life. I negotiated a settlement with the state, where they forgave tens of thousands of penalty and interest, settling the debt for for original tax. Now he has his license back, and can get better jobs further away from his home.
How did you build a successful practice?
The keys to my success are compassion for my client, passion for my work, and attention to detail. I put my clients, who are often scared of the IRS, at ease. I take great satisfaction in applying the nuances of the law to complicated facts, and coming up with a tailored tax solution for my clients.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
Compassion for the client, passion for the work to be done, and honesty of uncertainty. All the ability in the world doesn't amount to much without the internal drive to get success for the client. A lawyer must also be honest with his client and himself that there are no guaranteed outcomes. Too often clients come to me with stories of other tax "professionals" who over-sold and under-delivered for premium fees.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
Very. Anyone with an IRS problem usually has a state tax problem. Maryland does not have the elaborate policies and standard-operating-procedures that IRS has. Knowing who to ask for what, and under what conditions, is essential to resolving state tax troubles.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
I assess the problem the caller describes. If I think we can be of service and value, I invite them to come in for a free, no obligation, in-person consultation. If they cannot come in, I can still do a detailed consultation over the phone. If a called has a problem, but not the kind that justifies my fee, I try to point them in right direction to help themselves.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
For the caller to make the best use of their consultation, I would like to know: 1) how much is owed to IRS; 2) how much is owed to the State; 3) is this business or personal tax debt, and 4) have all tax returns been filed? If they do not have this information, that's ok. I am still happy to speak with them, and do what I can.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
My peers in other firms comment on my attention to detail to the nuances of the tax law. I put in the extra study and thought to find insights that are not obvious at first blush.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
The relief and joy my clients express when I have successfully resolved their tax troubles.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
My wife and I have small children who keep us busy. Every-so-often I still get to indulge in my love of sci-fi, comic books, noir detective fiction, and other nerdy interests.
Are you involved in your community?
I am an active member of the bar, especially pro bono efforts to get tax law help to those who need it, but can't afford it. Beyond that, I make the effort to be a good neighbor. My family just joined a congregation, and I look forward to being an active member there, too.
