My daddy brought me out here from Virginia back in the 70s because he'd spent many of his own youthful summers back in the 50s at the Diamond G taking dudes on trail rides and looking after the horses. My memories of the place are dim (and won't be refreshed any time soon as the road is posted no trespassing several miles before the old ranch complex) but recollect the lodge being as beautiful in its way as any European manor. My pop ended up out here because right after WWII my granddad had a Jeep dealership and this fellow Percy Yarbrough --a rancher from out Asheville NC way-- wanted a few Willys to herd cattle. They became friends, but a couple of years later Percy left NC because "there are too many people here." He came to Wyoming and the Diamond G (again, this is if I recall correctly) to run their cattle operation while the dude ranch business ran parallel. Percy knew my pop of course because he'd visited our horse farm west of Richmond VA and knew he was a fine young horseman (for an Easterner anyway) so Perce invited my ol' dad to come on out for his 14th summer: a summer that changed my father's life forever. He rode summers out here four of his teenage years and it did wonders for his self-esteem at a time when a lot of boys get led astray. So the Diamond G has a special place in my heart too, 'cause it helped make my daddy the man he was (and he was beloved of all, believe you me). I couldn't get up to the old place to get y'all some pictures of what's there (or what's left) but those of you who used to visit this place will thrill with excitement at the attached photo of the view of Ramshorn as you proceed up the river valley to the ranch.
I can still remember going there just like it was yesterday. Except it was A long time ago 1955 to be excite. If I can remember it back that long ago it must have been something very special. We took the over night outing and got coat in A rain storm and could not make it back across the creek till late the next day. Every one made it back all safe and sound. The trip was A success that we tuck up riding horses when we got home. I rode for 30 till we had to sail the farm. So the Diamond G Ranch play A big part in my life. THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH DIAMOND G RANCH Stephen Sholty Lafayette, Indiana.
