Moon and Associates have been lifesavers on an incredibly difficult build we embarked on on a complex hillside project. They were able to quickly work through complicated problems as well as navigate the impossible permit process with ease. I cannot recommend them enough.
My wife and were fortunate to find Sam Moon and his team through referral for very difficult and complicated structural damages to our house. Sam Moon worked with our architect, contractors and MEP team to assess the problems, and recommend the safest and most cost-effective solutions for our project. He provided continuous support, was effective with city authorities and inspectors because to everyone he creates confidence with his professional and honest approach to all solutions for any given challenge or task. We thoroughly enjoyed working with Sam and his team and enjoyed all our communication with him, his sense of humor, and his integrity.
Highly recommend Moon & Associates!!!! Sam, Henry and Judy Moon literally saved our home and our sanity. These wonderful professionals guided us through a complicated, structural repair and remodel. Their costs were a fraction of what we expected and their work helped us avoid costly mistakes. Sam refused to charge me for hours of early discussions about the project. When another contractor made a mistake that required additional Moon work, Moon & Associates automatically cut their fee without us even asking. We know we were not their biggest client but they always treated us as if we were their most important client. In the world of contractors and vendors who overpromise and underperform, Moon & Associates is a rare breath of fresh air. These are people who act with integrity and honesty, regardless of the size of the project. They are responsive, prompt, and collaborative. Often over the months of our project, after a long week of changing scope of work, Henry would deliver necessary input on Friday nights so that others would have his direction first thing on Monday so work would not be delayed. Sam always responded on the same day to my calls, texts and emails. Moon & Associates advocated for us from the soil studies, upon discovery that our foundation had no rebar, and during the placement of helical anchors instead of a more expensive caisson system. Everyone agrees that Moon & Associates' effort has been impressive. Moon & Associates has earned enviable relationships with architects, contractors, and government officials who listen to their recommendations and rely upon their input. They are knowledgeable and practical. They listen and people listen to them. If you need structural and civil engineering, you need Moon & Associates.
Stay away from these people at all cost.. They will overbill you then file a lien if you don’t pay. That is what they did to me. I’ve been in construction for over 25 years and have only two horrible experiences. This was one of the worst experiences I’ve ever had dealing with a vendor. My landscape architect had heard about them from his vendor and set up the meeting with the owner Samuel Moon. They were initially hired to do a feasibility on a small backyard trellis (4 posts). They immediately asked for a $3000 retainer and ask me to sign a document. This should have been a red flag but since I trusted my architect I signed it and they didn’t even give me a copy. They were supposed to give us some calculations to see if the posts that were installed could support a covered roof. He assured us that the calculations will be done in a week. After a few weeks of waiting, my landscape architect kept telling me that they keep telling him they need more time. After about a month we received a set of calculations that were totally over the top and unusable. My contractor asked me who are these people and he sent it to his engineer as mine was unavailable. We asked them to stop the work and give us the balance of the retainer. That is when they told us that the retainer was all used up and we would be receiving an additional bill. They sent a bill for over triple the original retainer and demanded immediate payment. We wrote them back and disputed it. The other engineering firm we hired not only gave us the right calculations in a week but they also drew up the plans and got it approved by the city. All this and they charged less than $2000 for the whole thing. That is reasonable and the going rate for that work. Moon & Associates not only refused to give anything back but filed a mechanical lien on our property for $8000. This is on top of the $3000 we had given them. They never mentioned any of this to my landscape architect or me. To make matters worse they called the city on us and made a complaint. An inspector showed up to my property and asked to see an unauthorized trellis on the property, and that there had been an “anonymous complaint”. They didn’t know we had submitted the plans and were already in plan check. I told them I knew who had reported us and told them the story and the new calculations. My inspector mentioned that unfortunately their are a lot of people going through similar situation as me and that we can file a complaint with state license board. The trellis I now almost done and the cost of construction was equal to their fee. I just want to make sure no one goes through this experience that I had with this company and warn them not to work with people like this.
