On the 8th of March 2018, I received the worst news of my life in the mailbox- I had been served a NOID. I was given 30 days to come up with a rebuttal.nEarly the next morning my 16 year old daughter and I went to see my attorney. This attorney had represented me for 6 years, had done little or nothing to move my case forward, but nothing prepared me for what he did that morning. He glanced at the NOID letter with disinterest, told me my case was insurmountable, then turned to my 16 year old rising star and said to her, "You're going to get deported." nnIt felt like I had just been dealt a hard blow to my gut. I stumbled out of this attorney's office. I called another attorney who read my NOID, told me he wasn't going to take my case, and instead sent me a link to the Canadian immigration website, whilst also telling me I could take a chance and remain in the U.S if I wouldn't mind being monitored with ankle bracelets by USCIS.nnI did not know what to do or where to turn. I stood in the middle of the streets in downtown Chicago sobbing uncontrollably. My daughter said to me, "Mom, stop crying. Let's look for another lawyer, this time a female one.Women are generally compassionate." She grabbed her phone and started to search for a lawyer online. Eventually she said "Aha! Mom, I found the right one! Her eyes are kind and her reviews are great and she's pretty too!" And that was how I met Lisa Scott. nnLisa Scott agreed to see us that day despite her busy schedule. My daughter and I walked into Lisa's office and I felt like I was finally "home." Her staff were extremely kind and professional.nnWe were ushered into the conference room and a few minutes later Lisa walked in and took the seat opposite me. I looked up and stared into her eyes. My daughter was right--She did have very kind eyes. The next thing she said to me was, My name is Lisa, how may I help you?" Hearing her say those words brought on another whirlwind of emotions. I broke down. And as I sobbed in the seat across from Lisa, she patiently waited for me to compose myself, reassuring me that she had time to wait while I gathered my emotions. I eventually gathered myself and I told her my story.nnThe first thing Lisa did was calm me. She said to me, "I will give your case all I've got." And that was exactly what she did. Many times I would call her and she would say she slept little the previous night thinking about the best way to push my case. She spent many hours reviewing my documents, and speaking to my witnesses. She was always a phone call away. She returned emails in the most timely manner.nAs the 30 day deadline approached, I felt confident about my case. I trusted Lisa with my whole heart. I had seen how much she invested in my case; she had meticulously put together a strong rebuttal. I was no longer worried or afraid. I went to see her one last time before she submitted the rebuttal. She hugged me and said, "I am hopeful. You have a strong case."nnOn the 20th of August, 2018, about four months after I submitted my rebuttal, I received a notice of approval from USCIS. My NOID had been overcome--all thanks to Lisa.nnIn all the years my case had pended, I had seen my share of attorneys. Not one of them stood out like Lisa Scott. She is a fighter. She will give you all she has. nnThank you, Lisa. Because of you, my girls and I have a shot at the American dream. Thank you again and again.
