Getty helped me with a custody case . And if it wasn't for him I don't know where I would be . I thank him from the bottom of my ??. He is a good honest man.
I went to Getty and Associates for a custody battle after being referred to Fred Getty. My first appointment, although costing $150, was really great. Despite hearing the exact opposite of what I wanted to hear, I felt confident with Mr. Getty on my side. He listened to the needs of myself and my partner and approached us with humor, easing my very unsettled nerves. He informed us at the end of this meeting that I would be working with Joanna in the future, as a cost saving measure, until the actual trial. I appreciated this, thinking it would save money, not understanding that she would be learning how to do her job on my dime. I met with Joanna twice, and both times felt like she was going to do hours of research on topics that someone in her position should already know. She was supposed to help me with the custody battle, yet knew nothing about the questions I asked, despite it being a pretty common case. She thought that recordings of the father saying he didn't care if his child was dead were irrelevant, and didn't clearly didn't understand what was stated on other recordings. She suggested getting a background check with a "PI," who was in the mortgage business rather than a PI, and merely repeated back the information I already knew, and charged me $125. (I sent the same information to Ward Investigations and got 5x as much information for $50). She also insisted on doing certain paperwork that I could easily do myself, simply to rack up her hours. I decided not to push forward with trail and retracted what little was left of my retainer. Overall, I spent well over $1000 with Getty and Associates and felt like I gained nothing.
List of complaints and observations. Do yourself a favor, believe what people are telling you about themselves. Getty and Associates should be avoided at all costs UNLESS getting negative results and over paying for such results is actually what you were seeking when hiring an attorney: My list of complaints and observations: 1. The office in not well managed; Mr. Getty was an hour late for our appointment. And, it only worsened from there. 2. He told me he wasn't interested filing a "federal" law suit on my behalf..although filing a federal and state suit made the most sense. L3. I literally had to teach him about Federal Fair Housing law and how it applies to HOAs, you know, like the one in the shadow of his office, Lake of the Woods Association Inc. 3. Office was sloppy and disorganized and I belive this is a reflection of Mr. Getty's lack of professionalism. 4. For some reason Getty is very arrogant and overly confident about his abilities without establishing why I or anybody else should trust this guy to represent you in court for a speeding ticket let alone a a divorce, child custody or a lawsuit. 5. Study the "positive" reviews for this firm...one or two words, nothing specific, clear evidence of fake reviews. 6. To echo another rater's words, "One Star is too high a rating for Mr. Getty and his den of inequity. 7. As I was leaving, Mr. Getty told me to pay his administrative person $250 for the consultation. Mind you, neither he nor the person that set up the appointment EVER told me about a fee for the first consultation. I would not have gone had I been told about it. I asked him why I wasnt given notice of a fee upfront as required by Virginia law? All of a sudden his tune changed and he told me to leave, He is not accustom to clients knowing their rights. 8. As I left the building and walked to my car, an administrative assistant ran after me to collect the $250. I told her to speak with Mr. Getty because he told me to leave and I did not owe any fee. She seemed very perplexed. I said to her, "do you see that I'm in the parking lot and leaving and that Getty would certainly not let me leave the building without collecting his extortion money or allowing me to leave without charge. I told her to reach out to her boss over the phone, got in my truck and left. I live in Lake of the Woods, have for many years, and thought, he's so close to the place that he must care about LOW members. NOPE, he can care less. Find an attorney that offers a free consultation, is organized, on time and genuinely listens to your concerns, because you are NOT going to get any of those services. I''ll post an update with better attorney options in the future.
After hearing mixed reviews I decided to go to Fred Getty to clear my case. I was given a fair price and not expected to pay a penny more. I got the best possible outcome with Fred on my side and I was very pleased with his dedication to my case. The lawyers in general are of a certain personality and you would expect a bit of "cockyness" considering what they do, regardless of the situation Fred had my back and I would highly recommend Fred Getty!!
I hate to do it - but I have to agree with all of the negative reviews on here for the office. I have a laundry list of complaints - but please - save your money and go somewhere else. The contract we received was subpar at best and left everyone involved open to massive liabilities. The office was quick to tell us later (after the large bill) that they are not real estate lawyers so their contracts will look a lot different - but in the same breath state that they do these contracts for transactions within the lake all the time. Giving out lacking contracts all the time for something you don't actually specialize in isn't a justification for doing something you aren't well versed in. I wish I had read the reviews before calling in - but just figured since he was close and had done a lot of transactions around us that he would be a good bet. I was wrong, and am happy that the people selling to us knew enough to reject the contract that was sent to us.
