About Gerald

I have been a licensed attorney in Maryland for 35 years. I originally concentrated on Family Law, specifically divorce and child custody. While I do accept a limited number of family law matters, I now concentrate in the area of foreclosure litigation. This includes foreclosure defense and suits against lenders. I practice at the trial and appellate level. I received my law degree from Howard University in 1982, graduating magna cum laude, and ranked first in my class. In 1969 I received my undergraduate degree from The Pennsylvania State University in accounting. I was admitted to the Maryland Bar in 1982, and the Florida Bar in 2009. I am also admitted to practice before the United States District Court for the District of Maryland, the United States District Court for Florida, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal and Fourth Circuit. I hold the highest national Martindale- Hubble lawyer rating of AV*. I am a recipient of the American Jurisprudence Awards in Family Law, Federal Jurisprudence, Conflicts, Corporations, and Agency. When necessary, I think outside of the box. I often collaborate on cases with Sari Kurland, Esquire of the Kurland Law Group in Rockville, MD. Many times Sari and I will team up in approaching a case. The issue is not finding a cookie cutter approach to a case. The issue is what we can do as attorneys to achieve the best result for our clients.

Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

It was a case against a major bank where my client sued the bank for violations in the Equal Credit Opportunity Act. The case took three years to successfully litigate against the bank. The key to success was to persist and think outside of the box by adapting unique approaches to the issues as they arose.

How did you build a successful practice?

Integrity, persistence, persistence and persistence. I listened to and communicated with my clients. I learned, and continue to learn, every day of my life. I was and am honest with my clients and the court.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

The ability to communicate with them, opposing counsel, and the court. The ability to listen.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

It depends upon the court, community and type of case. Local knowledge is a factor in choosing an attorney. Your prospective counsel should be able to answer this question as it applies to your case.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

This depends on the facts and status of the case. It also depends on the location of the case, opposing counsel, court rulings to date, and the judge hearing the case. The best way I can answer this is to say that I rarely get a complaint that I did not give the individual a significant amount of knowledge. That does not mean that the potential client will or should hire me, that simply means that I answer their questions whenever possible.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

Basic information about the case, including the status of the case. Was anything filed? If so, the prospective client must get me a copy of the case filings. The free phone conference is generally two parts. During the first call my secretary will get some basic information, including any emergencies or deadlines. If I am available, I will take the call. In most instances I will request a copy of the complete file from the court and I will schedule a follow up call after I receive the documents.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

Knowledge of the law relating to the prospective client's case. I am willing to acknowledge areas where I must do research (remember, I learn every day). The amount of time that I spend during the initial calls.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

Working with people trying to save their home. Having an attorney tell me that I inspired him to become an attorney. Having a child tell me that they want to be an attorney because of me. Even through a client may have lost their home, having the client thank me for my effort.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

Woodworking and photography.

Are you involved in your community?

Yes, I am a board member in my synagogue. I was a board member of my community association.
