About Hillary

Ms. Hughes’s practice focuses primarily on business, technology and sports and entertainment transactions.  She has a broad background in such areas as brand management, licensing, mergers and acquisitions, venture capital, private equity, technology, manufacturing, telecommunications, outsourcing and life sciences.  Ms. Hughes serves as the Chair of the firm’s Sports, Arts & Entertainment Group.

The clients of her Sports, Arts & Entertainment practice include new and established recording artists, actors, television personalities, writers, producers, journalists, broadcasters, photographers, fashion designers, culinary artists, talent managers and athletes as well as physical, occupational and speech therapists.  Ms. Hughes counsels these clients on the legal aspects of their businesses, from day-to-day matters to sophisticated transactions.  She has been interviewed by the Sports Business Journal and quoted on E! News on celebrity matters and trends in the law.

Ms. Hughes also advises established businesses, entrepreneurs and start-up and early-stage businesses.  Her business clients operate in such diverse industries as media and communications, technology, marketing, design, pharmaceuticals, electronics, consumer goods, food & beverages, financial services, retail, manufacturing, and other goods and services industries.  The transactions on which Ms. Hughes counsels them are often cross-border in nature.

Prior to undertaking transactional practice, Ms. Hughes gained experience in trial and appellate litigation.  She has successfully advocated before the Appellate Division of the State of New York.  Litigating commercial and tort cases, Ms. Hughes has also participated in numerous alternative dispute resolution forums. She currently serves as an arbitrator in the Small Claims Part of the Civil Court for the City of New York.

Ms. Hughes's legal education concentrated on foreign and international law, and she was recognized for her achievements in that field of study with the CALI award for Excellence for the Future in International Law.

She is dedicated to pro bono service to both non-profit organizations and individuals unable to afford legal services and to personal volunteer service to a variety of public charities. Her involvement in the legal community includes membership in local bar associations such as the New York County Lawyers’ Association, where she served as chair of its Corporation Law Committee for seven years. She is also a member of the Sports, Entertainment and International Law and Practice Sections of the American, New York State, and New York Women's Bar Associations. Ms. Hughes is also a member of the Sports Lawyers Association and the Business Law Section of the American Bar Association, the Association of the Bar of the City of New York and the Jewish Lawyers Guild.
