About Hugh

Hugh was born and raised in the North Central portion of North Carolina in the town of Oxford.  After graduating from High School, he attended N.C. State University where he majored in Political Science.  While there, Hugh was elected to the Student Judicial Board and served on the Intrafraternity Council.  In 1973, Hugh attended the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation Academy and was assigned to Fayetteville and Fort Bragg sectors.  The majority of his work was devoted to Homicide investigation in the Southeastern portion of the State, Cumberland and Harnett counties and later in Duplin, Pender, and Onslow counties.  Hugh left the Bureau in 1977 as a Senior Agent in order to attend Law School at Campbell University.  There he was elected an officer on the Student Bar Council and represented Campbell Law at its first Moot Court competition in Birmingham, Alabama.  He also won book awards in Trial Advocacy and Products Liability and was admitted to Omicron Delta Kappa.  After graduation, Hugh returned to his hometown of Oxford and practiced law with his father until 1998.  During this time, he served on the Board of Directors for the Heart Fund, Triangle Hospice, Granville Arts Council, Granville Little Theatre, Oxford Exchange Club, and the Oxford Jaycees.  While a Jaycee, he served as a Director and President, and had the privilege of serving as Associate Legal Counselor for NC state organization.  Hugh and his family attended St Stephen's Episcopal Church.  He served several tenures on its Vestry and twice as Senior Warden.  In 2005, he was selected as a participant member to attend the National 52nd Security Forum of the Air War College at Maxwell AFB in Montgomery, Alabama.  In 1998, he merged with another Law firm and continued his Law Practice as Royster, Cross and Currin, LLP and also continued as Legal Counselor to the City of Oxford Planning and Zoning Boards.  In the last year of his stay in Oxford, he served as President of the Granville County Chamber of Commerce and established an Ambassador program.  Hugh is presently a DRC certified Superior Court Mediator, a Family Financial Mediator, and Clerk of Court Mediator.  He is presently a member of the NC State Bar, NC Bar Association, Brunswick County Bar and NC Association of Family Mediators.  He has also served as Counselor to the NC State Bar and as Member on the Grievance and Ethics Committees; his local service included terms as President of the Granville County Bar and the Ninth Judicial District Bar.  Hugh and his wife Cathy moved to the Leland area in 2007 in order to be closer to Cathy's mother and father and two brothers who all live in the Wilmington area and to fulfill a dream, of returning the Cape Fear region, made many years ago since their wedding here in Wilmington, NC
