Ira M. Maurer is a nationally recognized personal injury trial lawyer with a prestigious history of winning major legal victories for severely injured clients over more than three decades. As a leader in the railroad law field, Ira M. Maurer has won more than one thousand claims -- including several precedent setting lawsuits, against interstate and intrastate railroad for railroad employees and passengers. He has brought successful claims against a variety of railroads such as: Metro-North Commuter Railroad; Amtrak; the Long Island Railroad; New Jersey Transit Rail; PATH; the New York Transit Authority; Delaware and Hudson Railroad; Conrail; CSX Railroad; Canadian Pacific Railway; Penn Central Railroad; the Santa Fe Railroad; and the Staten Island Rapid Transit Operating Authority.
Ira M. Maurer has represented railroad employees from every job craft including: signalmen, signal inspectors, engineers, conductors, firemen, brakemen, trackmen, electricians, welders, iron workers, carmen, coach cleaners, painters, sheet metal workers, janitors, communications technicians, vending machine technicians, ticket agents, information booth clerks, block operators, rail traffic controllers, power directors, inventory clerks, distribution center drivers, crane operators, boom truck operators, MTA police officers and detectives and management employees, and has worked alongside many local and international union officers who represent workers in all railroad crafts.
Attorney Maurer was admitted to the New York bar in 1980 and has established law in several reported cases. He has also been admitted to practice in various federal courts in New York, Connecticut and New Jersey, as well as the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court. He has also served as a federal court mediator in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York for more than a decade.
Ira M. Maurer is a member of the American Association for Justice, the New York Trial Lawyers Association, the New York State Bar Association and is a founding member of the Academy of Rail Labor Attorneys. He also served as a member of the Trial Lawyers Care Committee and represented victims of the World Trade Center Disaster without compensation.
For ten years, he was a member of the board of directors for the Lyme Disease Foundation. Ira Maurer is considered the forefather of Lyme disease-related litigation in the United States, having won the first negligence-based case in the country on behalf of four signal department workers against the Long Island Railroad, and has been a guest speaker on the subject.
Ira Maurer's education began with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Harpur College, the liberal arts school at the State University of New York at Binghamton, followed by a Juris Doctor degree from St. John's University School of Law. He has been married for over 30 years and has two daughters.
