J.D. Garrett was born in Charlottesville, VA and raised in Virginia Beach. After graduating from F.W. Cox High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He gained the rank of Sergeant and lead an artillery squad before being honorably discharged. J.D. then received his B.A. from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and his Juris Doctorate from the William S. Boyd School of Law at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
