Walsh v Walsh Practice Area: Child Support Date: Jan 01, 1999 Outcome: Mom won Description: Mom wanted to modify child support where Dad was paying mortgage instead of direct support after the obligation ended. As a result of this case, every support matter requires the parties to determine the amount of support to be paid and explain why the court should accept a deviation.

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
I handle many complex consumer bankruptcy cases where the debtors could potentially have lost property. But due to the detailed evaluation,I am able to advise clients to take prefiling actions or otherwise utilize the bankruptcy laws to obtain the best results possible. I recently handled the appeal of a domestic violence order. It was difficult because the nature of the abuse was not any recent specific act of violence against my client but rather a long series of abusive acts which created a fear of injury by her ex husband.
How did you build a successful practice?
I treat every client with respect. I keep client's informed of the status of their matters. I answer and return phone calls. I practice at a high level which has earned accolades including being elected chair of the consumer bankruptcy section and an AV Pre Eminent rating from Martindale Hubbell
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
It certainly helps but I have no problem representing clients in jurisdictions where I do not go frequently. The most important factor in success is preparation. A well prepared case will be the Judge's friend any day.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
General idea of what type of service is needed. I don't make promises of success or amount of fees. I prefer to meet people in my office where I can really ask questions, analyze review documents at a free consultation. Phone consultations are no better than getting advise from a lawyer on the radio.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
That depends on the type of case but I need the client to do their homework and be familiar with their own facts. This should be obvious but especially in the bankruptcy arena, many clients are not able to give certain facts until I request that they gather information for our in person meeting.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
I am able to cross over between domestic/bankruptcy, personal injury/ bankruptcy which very few attorneys can do. I have been in Owings Mills since 1983.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
Actually dealing and helping people.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
I am an avid cyclist. I participate in an event called the Pan Mass Challenge which raised $45 million last year for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. In the 4 years, I have participated, my friends, colleagues and client's have helped raise over $27,000. This is a 160 mile 2 day ride. My other athletic activity is skiing. My son and I are civil war buffs and visit Gettysburg frequently.
