About John

I am a trial lawyer for one reason: to help people. I take great pride in representing people - from young children to the elderly - who have been injured due to the carelessness of others. My goal is to help injured victims get their lives back on track and also to make our communities safer by holding wrongdoers accountable for their actions.

For the first seven (7) years of my legal career, I served as defense counsel on behalf of the insurance industry and large corporations. In 2014, I began exclusively representing injured victims and helping them recover the compensation and benefits they deserve. During my time representing injured victims, I have helped recover millions of dollars on their behalf and I have also helped them to begin to put the pieces of their lives back together.

I have been recognized as a Super Lawyers - Rising Star in 2016 and 2017. I was recently named a Top 100 Civil Plaintiff Trial Lawyer by The National Trial Lawyers and I received the Premier Attorney designation by the National Academy of Jurisprudence. I am a graduate of the American Association for Justice's Trial Advocacy College, which was held at Harvard Law School in March 2016.

During my legal career, I have tried numerous cases (both first and second chair) to verdict in western Pennsylvania. I have also argued cases before the trial courts, appellate courts and federal courts throughout Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

I am a member of the Allegheny County Bar Association and the West Virginia Bar Association. I am also a member of the American Association for Justice (AAJ), the Pennsylvania Association for Justice (PAJ), and the Western Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers Association (WPTLA). I am also the founder of Steel City Focus Groups – an organization providing focus group sessions to the legal community.

In 2012, I authored the article “Principles for Success: Advice for Young Lawyers,” which was featured in the July/August 2012 edition of The Pennsylvania Lawyer and then updated in the Fall 2014 editions of The Sidebar (AAJ) and The Advocate (WPTLA). I enjoy keeping up with the latest legal technology to help facilitate efficiency in my every day legal practice.

I received my law degree in 2006 from Ohio Northern University – Claude W. Pettit College of Law. During law school, I served as Associate Editor for the Law Review and as a judicial extern to the Honorable Walter H. Rice in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio. As a member of the Law Review, I published the article, "Case Study: State v. Lozier, 101 Ohio St. 3d 161, 31 Ohio N.U.L.Rev. 552 (2005)." I received the book award for the highest overall grade in two courses: Civil Practice and Real Estate Transactions.

I graduated summa cum laude from Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania in 2003 with a B.A. in Philosophy. In 2002-2003, I was recognized as Slippery Rock University’s "Most Outstanding Philosophy Student" after receiving statewide honors for my paper, “KNOWLEDGE IS POWER: INFLUENTIAL THINKERS IN THE LIFE OF THOMAS JEFFERSON.” While attending Slippery Rock University, I served as President of the Law Society, Vice President of Phi Sigma Tau Honor Society and Editor-in-Chief of "The Grapevine."

Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

I successfully represented a minor child who was physically and sexually abused at a youth home. I was able to obtain a successful recovery on his behalf so that he will be able to afford future medical treatment as he transitions back into society.

How did you build a successful practice?

My practice is only 1 month old, but I am forging solid client relationships through honesty, integrity and hardwork.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

Clients must make sure the lawyer they select is knowledgeable, experienced and has a good personal connection to the client. This will ensure a postive attorney-client relationship.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

Being able to navigate the local court system is something that is not very easy for lawyers outside of our jurisdiction. Having a good working knowledge about the court's local rules and the particular Judges tendencies can go a long way in successfully representing clients on difficult legal matters.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

I can provide a step-by-step process of how I would handle the case if I were to be retained. I would give the potential client enough information so that he/she can make a well-reasoned decision before hiring a lawyer.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

I would like the basic facts of the case including what happened, where it happened, who was involved and the date/time of the incident. I would also like to know how the incident could have been avoided, if at all.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

There are many good lawyers in my community, but I believe my personality, work ethic and desire to achieve a great result for the client allows me to give my clients the best possible legal experience, which they deserve from a lawyer.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

Seeing a client smile at the end of the case and telling me that they are so happy to have hired me to represent them or their children in such a serious legal matter, and that if they ever need a lawyer in the future they would be sure to dial my number first.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

I love spending time with my wife and our 2 daughters, ages 3 and 1. I also enjoy running in local charity races, participating in community events and cooking on the grill.

Are you involved in your community?

Yes. My family is involved in numerous charities throughout Pittsburgh and we spend a lot of time helping others in our community.
