John Manion | Brookfield Intellectual Property Lawyer

John M. Manion is one of the founding shareholders of Ryan Kromholz & Manion, S.C., located in Brookfield, Wisconsin.  The firm, which traces its roots back to 1873, was formed in 1998 and practices in all areas of intellectual property law including patent, trademark, copyright, and unfair competition law and related litigation.  John is the managing partner (January 1, 2012 to present) and heads the RKM Patent Law Team. He also counsels clients in intellectual property portfolio development strategies and represents them in licensing, complex contract, and litigation settlement negotiations. John is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office and admitted to practice in the United States District Court for the Eastern and Western Districts of Wisconsin and the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.  He received both his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering and a law degree from Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  John primarily represents manufacturing companies throughout the state of Wisconsin.

He is a member of the State Bar of Wisconsin, the American Bar Association, the Federal Circuit Bar Association, the Milwaukee Bar Association where he served as co-chairperson of the Intellectual Property Law Section, the Waukesha County Bar Association and the Wisconsin Intellectual Property Law Association where he served as Secretary / Treasurer and President.  John was a member of the Alumni Board of Directors at the Marquette University College of Engineering for six years where he served as Secretary, President-elect and President and was a member of the Alumni Board of Directors at Marquette University Law School.  He is presently a member of the Marquette University Law School Advisory Board of Directors.  He is also a member of the Marquette University Law School Woolsack Society.  John was named a Wisconsin Super Lawyer in 2006 and 2007 by Milwaukee Magazine.  In 2013, John was recognized as Lawyer of the Year - Patent Law in Milwaukee, Wisconsin by Best Lawyers®. In 2016, John was recognized as Lawyer of the Year - IP Litigation and Trademark Law in Milwaukee, Wisconsin by Best Lawyers®.

John heads the Ryan Kromholz & Manion, S.C. Patent Law Team which received a 2016 Tier 1 and Tier 2 Patent Law ranking in Milwaukee, a 2017 Tier 1 Litigation – Intellectual Property ranking in Milwaukee, and a 2018 Tier 1 Litigation-Intellectual Property ranking in Milwaukee as well as Tier 2 Litigation – Patent, Patent Law, and Trademark Law rankings in Milwaukee from U.S. News-Best Lawyers®.

John frequently lectures on patent law topics at Marquette University's College of Engineering and local high schools. He is on the planning committee for the 25th Anniversary Reunion for the 1993 Class of the Marquette University Law School. John also serves as an Assistant Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 135 in Wales, Wisconsin. John resides in Delafield, Wisconsin with his wife Lorelle, and their four children.
